Enjoy dismanteling half your engine/front bumper whilst replacing a lightbulb on those "stock entertainment" cars. (...) I'm happy I can replace a headlight bulb for a quid instead of 200 + missing the car for a day.
This is caused more-so by the fact that UK mechanics are under-qualified and the service stations and garages are generally poorly-equipped, at least from what I noticed when I was there rather than with the car at hand. Around here, whatever car you drive, every mechanic will be relatively capable of taking it apart to bits and bolts and putting it back together in expert time. Same with Ireland, really - my sis cracked her bumper and rather than mending the crack and putting a paintcoat on it which would cost next to nothing, the mechanic replaced the whole bumper... because... derp? :tpi:

Still, it takes a mechanic to do.
Which adds up the price cause they also need to get paid.

I'll stick to doing the small things me own to save money (ridiculous amounts sometimes)
Me V-belt snapped 2 months ago orso.
Garage would charge me 120 quid for replacing it whilst the belt it self is 10 quid and it took me less then an hour work with a mate to replace it.
I saved 110 quid for a silly belt ._.

If I would need to replace me headgasket for example, I'd send it to a mechanic indeed.
I don't have the knowledge to dismantle an entire engine nor do I have the tools/time for it ;p

Well, your headlight example is obviously an exaggeration, but I can agree with you with the "the smarter the car the harder it is to fix it" since it often entails "having a chat with the on-board computer" and you can't really do that yourself without the right (costly) equipment... then again, this only occurs with more serious issues - pretty sure that a lighbulb wouldn't cause you any more grief than it does now. ;P

Trust me, it's not cars of the 10's that are a headache to fix.
Mid/late 00's cars are also hard to fix yourself.

Me own '96 Mazda 323 is just a clamp, a fixture + screw ring.
Done in 5 minutes.
Me dads '01 Laguna needs some parts around the headlight removed before accessing a lightbulb.
Maybe 30 mins if you're quick?
a '08 Peugot of a colleague of me dad needs half of bumper removed and half of the engine to access the lightbulb.
Pretty much a couple of hours if you have the tools for it.

But yep, more serious issues are always costly/expensive but a bit of DIYing can save a fuck ton of money.
I wouldn't replace the oilscrapers of me pistons meself, nor would I change the Timing belt meself.

Anyway, I'm starting to get the feel that we're horribly derailing this thread ._.

Yes, I too feel so many feels concerning the derailment of this thread. :tpi:

So many feels.
