Gaming mario kart staff ghosts

I've been trying the mario kart time trials and saw that the staff ghosts use a mushroom every lap, whereas i only get one at the start...
Am i missing something?

It depends on the cart used. The "item" factor determines how many mushrooms you get.
Eg. Egg 1 = low item = 1 mushroom
eg. cucumber = high item = 3 mushrooms

I don't think it's possible to get 2 mushrooms by default
