I just beat the first tournament all the way to rainbow, unlocked the ninja and unlocked hard more. However I only have unlocked one ball....is this normal? I checked gamefaqs and they said I should have more balls.

wow thats really odd. I got diddy kong, bowser and only the Ninja and a Watermelon ball....I also completed the training mode with no rewards

Training Mode should give you a blue and white ball when you comeplete all the stages. Theres an FAQ on gamefaqs that shows you how to get characters and balls.
