I'll just get right to it.
I'm running a softmodded 4.3e wii and I'm used to playing games off of my super slick and black external hdd.
I wanted to play mario galaxy 2, but I only have it on disc so when I inserted the disc into my wii it told me, on the menu screen, that an update is required... What do I do? Will my poor wii get bricked if I do so?
Some guidance would be very very very thoughtful because I love my daily dose of mario platforming!

:)

Well, there are two options you have now:

- Just install the update. Since it's only a disc update, it won't harm your console in any way. Your softmod will be working as usual afterwards.

- Or if you are still worried, dump the game to your usb drive either through whatever usb loader you are using or with cleanrip. The game will still run fine, since the update isn't really needed.

Sorry, but this is just plain wrong.

1. the question to update from disc is exactly the same as the one you get from online. The only difference MAY be that older games do a check for older firmwares (4.2 or below) rather than 4.3. That doesn't apply to SMG2.
2. nintendo's updates never harm your console. You're wrongfully making an assumption that disc updates are somehow safer.
3. updates (again: both online and from disc) do a halfassed attempt at removing your homebrew. Assuming you've kept up with HBC and cIOS versions, it shouldn't be much of a deal. However...the fact that you get the question to begin with means that there is "an" IOS with a lower version than the update carries. And most of the time, that is IOS249.

So what does that latter mean? Simple: install the update and it'll overwrite cIOS249 with a stub. Which means that the softmod WON'T work as usual afterwards.

As to solutions: it's all already mentioned. In order of recommendation:
1. install priiloader and block both online and disc updates (recommended and most future-proof).
2. dump it to your hard drive and skip the update partition (shaves a couple megabytes off the size, the game won't bother you with it...but other games still might)
3. use any of the major loaders that can handle disk games (I know GX and wiiflow can do it, and CFG most likely as well. Not sure on postloader).

I want a handheld gaming system with a tablet sized screen, like a 8 or10" screen, with controllers that can detach like the Switch.

I don't see the buzz about a square screen personally. I think there will be a review on the site within a few weeks though if you are interested.

I've put down the money on the Odin 2 Mini since I just love that Vita form factor. Loved the power of the Odin 2 but the size always put me off, this one seems exactly what I've been wanting.
