Homebrew mame help

ive installed sdlmame on my homebrew channel when it boot and then initilizes it cannot find
any games ive made a mameroms folder i also turned off wiiconnect 24 still cannot load games
do i need to have the gamecube controller in before it will work or is there anything else ican do
apart from smash my wii up lol
