i thought macs dont get viruses

It's all talk. But now that more people have macs, it will be easier for hackers to exploit all those people who "think" they are impervious to them.

I'm sure someone could make a trojan that gets root access discreetly. Macs don't have enough market share yet for serious profiting hackers/crackers to commit, though.

No I was reffering to the OP when I asked if it was a virus

OP: What is this "virus" doing?

Science, im not entirely sure. it seems like she clicked on a bad google link, and it told her that she needed to scan for viruses with a windows themed window (FAIL). when you clicked on it it said that you had to download some sort of application. when i navigated away from the page it seemed to be ok, except that the crappy adware music kept playing even when i disconnected from the wifi. so i restarted the mac and it seems ok now... it was just weird. oh and i deleted all the InstallAVg.exe files.

I haven't checked it out myself as of yet (though I'll run a virus scan later today to be sure)

As for the "InstallAVg.exe", that looks to be a copy of AVG which is a popular freeware (and feeware as well) virus scanner for Windows. It updates just like any other antivirus program would but this would be the first I've heard of it as being infected with a virus.

If you can get a hold of Sophos Antivirus, I'd suggest running that program as it works on both Mac and Windows platforms. If you run into any further issues, feel free to let me know. I'm currently an IT tech at a university (plus I own a Macbook) and would be happy to help you out.

Also, have you updated the Macbook through Software Update (in the Apple Menu) as of late? I know that they've released some updates to the firmware within the last month of so.

Simple solution:
Don't pirate. Don't give root access to suspicious applications.

And also, this is not a virus. Viruses can spread themselves.

It's just as if you were to run `sudo rm -rf /` on Linux. If you encrypt a script that says that and put it up on torrents as "Crossover Pro 7.10 installer" or something, people run it with root, it's essentially the same thing. Mac users are too caught up in their "no viruses whatsoever" when the biggest cause of viruses is stupid users.
