Bump to say there's a huge list at https://www.reddit.com/r/3dshacks/comments/4pmpgb/new_3ds_serial_firmware_list/ that has the serial numbers and model names for specific firmware

I think it should be below 9.2 or 9.2 because it is quite old, if you buy it brand new, it was released 2014.

Avoid the latest yokai+2ds and the new style boutique 2+2ds

The rest is safe, I think. The MK7 preinstalled+2ds are 6.2 or 8.1 the higher ones.

EDIT: Those two looks like they are not even in sale yet. 7th october. You are safe.

Ok, I'll be honest; theres no need to get a 2DS. Its way underpowered. Just get a 3DS and not use the 3D.

You missed the point
This thread is about trying to get either a 3DS or 2DS with a low firmware preinstalled, and 2DSes in particular (especially the Mario Kart 7 bundle in the US) have low firmwares to allow for homebrew (or should I say more advanced homebrew)

Also, the 2DS has the same power as the original 3DS and is much cheaper maybe not idk, so who really cares ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ok, I'll be honest; theres no need to get a 2DS. Its way underpowered. Just get a 3DS and not use the 3D.

The 2DS has the same power as the old 3DS and (my opinion) has the best grip of them all. It fits incredible well in your hand despite the looks. I've all of them, and 2DS is perfect to just throw into your bag and things like that. It's a really good console and if you are not into 3D, Xenoblade and SNES eShop stuff, it serves you pretty well.
