Hardware Local Multiplayer with different firmware versions?

I will be in a really long trip to Italy in around 7 hours and I want to play some 3DS games with my friend.

I have 11.3 and my friend has 11.4. The reason why I don't update is because of the recently patched Homebrew Support

Can you still play local multiplayer with different firmware versions?

Yes you can, but you can use homebrew with 11.4, so it's perfectly safe to update.
