Hacking Leave hdd plugged in all the time? (+PSA)

Quick question and quick public service announcement:

Question: is it okay to leave a USB hdd plugged into the wii all the time? The reason I ask is because I was leaving a USB stick plugged in and my wii destroyed it. I read that this is a fairly common problem with the wii. I also read about a million threads that said USB sticks don't work very well anyway.

PSA: I ran over to Best Buy and bought a cheap USB hdd. All problems solved. Pretty dang good deal for a 1 TB WD drive. I can't post the link, but it's $45

The PSA was just the cheap hdd... not that you should use a hdd... but even that part was probably already well known.
