Malcolm X. Extremely well made movie, absurdly long, but I was engaged. Strong cast, of course Denzel Washington carried it. It's a once-in-a-liftime movie, there can't be a better depiction of Malcolm X, a better biopic about him. It's pretty confrontational, as Spike Lee tends to be, critical of White people and bad actors in NOI. There's a lot to take from the movie, but a very simple thing is that it showcases how a person can change completely. In a movie that feels like a solid 3-act structure, Malcolm changed a few times. I like that. It's really the best kind of biopic, it's uncompromising and epic.

Lately I've been watching episodes of Siskel & Ebert's long-running review series. There's a Twitch channel streaming episodes of that series 24/7. I don't agree with their opinions very often, but I find them entertaining, especially when they argue or trash movies they thought were bad. Roger Ebert named Malcolm X as the best movie of 1992, that's high praise.

Conclave - A very good political thriller that deserved all its nominations and should've gotten a few more (Director, Sound, and Cinematography). Ralph Fiennes led the movie amazingly well, with a strong ensemble cast overall. Isabella Rossellini stole the show in one scene and overall was such a strong presence in the movie. Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, Carlos Diehz, and Lucian Msamati were good. The production design is amazing, they made the sets look like legit Vatican locations. The score is perfect for a thriller, plenty of ominous tunes, orchestral pieces dominated by violins, and some choir singing. A very tight and well-researched screenplay. It is based on a novel, but was still written well. It is a slow-burn of a movie, but it's worth sticking around. The ending was a doozy. It would be a safe pick for Best Picture as it is the most agreeable of the nominations. I think it's the 3rd most likely to win. It's definitely winning Best Adapted Screenplay.

In ranking the 5 Best Picture nominees I've seen so far, Anora and The Substance are still in the lead at 1-2, respectively. Nickel Boys and Conclave would be 3 and 4, or can trade the spots, I'm not 100% sure. That's still high praise, it's a fine movie. Emilia Perez is still dead last.

Fight or Flight (2025)

Action/comedy trash aimed at my demographic. Fun, cheesy, but middling-at-best execution. Evocative of Bullet Train (2022), I think I liked this one a bit better (probably the Starbuck effect - she should probably still fire her agent).

The Substance. 4th time watching it overall, 1st time this year. I still love it, but the more I watch it, the more emotional I get. Once I got passed the absolute insanity and nastiness of the movie, deep down, it's such a sad, heartbreaking story. I'm a sucker for strange genre bends and movies that have intensely real stories wrapped up in genre thrills. The substance satisfies on all levels,

Red Rock West - Hidden gem from the 90s starring Nic Cage, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Dennis Hopper. Those actors and JT Walsh did a fantastic job with a very solid and lively script. Neo-noir western, truly a rare breed.

Super Mario Bros (1993) - Great way to celebrate Mario Day, right? This was my 2nd time watching it. The first was 8 years ago. I gave it a 2nd chance to see if I would like the movie. I didn't like it upon the first viewing, knowing that it's not faithful to the Mario franchise. I kept an open mind that it could be a "so bad it's good movie." It hardly was. On 2nd viewing...my mind hasn't changed. It's a mixed bag of laughably bad and just bad. The visuals were also a mixed bag of crusty CG and decent practical effects. The dinosaur dimension looked like the underground section of Demolition Man, which came out the same year, and bizarro Blade Runner. There's a surreal quality to that world, but they didn't capitalize on it to my liking. Lacking performances from some visibly annoyed actors (Hoskins and Hopper), shots that linger too much, slow pacing, pure stupidity. I just couldn't get into this. It's like Mortal Kombat Annihilation, it barely swings into "so bad, it's good" territory, it still ends up a bad movie. I love the 1994 Street Fighter movie, that settled nicely in "so bad it's good" territory and at least there was an electrifying performance in that, Raul Julia as M. Bison. None of that here. It's telling that the directors were the creators of Max Headroom and made their name in commercials before doing the Mario movie. The translation to film was sloppy. This movie just didn't work for me. The 2023 animated version is much better, faster-paced, and more lively. I'm no Chris Pratt fan, but I would rather have him as Mario than a miserable Bob Hoskins.

The Godfather - I can't disagree with the vat majority of people who hail this as one of the best movies ever. It's a masterpiece and now I see it as Coppola's equivalent to "He made Graduation." Yeah he made an all-time stinker in Megalopolis, but he still made The Godfather. And Part 2 is fantastic as well. 3...not so much.

Y2K - Succeeds at being a total nostalgic kick for millennials, fun sci-fi horror movie, but the biggest flaw is the acting. It can be forgiven since it's a silly movie, but still worth bringing up. I'm 32, so this movie appeals to people in my age range. It's funny that the young actors in this were born after Y2K, while the older cast members, like a barely used Tim Heidecker and Alicia Silverstone certainly experienced that time.

last time I watched LET ME IN. its a american remake of a movie called LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and the story revolves around a boy who gets bullied a lot who eventually befriends a girl who is secretely a hundreds of years old vampire.
The movie has a rather serious tone to it. Meaning it is not a TWILIGHT style of a film.
But I would suggest to watch the original instead of the remake.

Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars - Fun Hong Kong martial arts film starring and directed by Sammo Hung. Features a lot of regulars of the HK action/comedy scene. Along with Hung there was Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Richard Norton, Rosamund Kwan, Sibelle Hu, and even a small Michelle Yeoh appearance. It is disjointed because there 2 distinct plots that hardly converged until the final act, and the comedy centers on horny men sexually harassing women, but the fight scenes and performances from many of the actors make it worth watching.

They Cloned Tyrone. This movie sadly went under the radar, Netflix made the dumb decision of releasing it during Barbenheimer. This is a very funny and unique blend of sci-fi, mystery, comedy, and Blaxploitation. The 3 leads are fantastic: John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx. Great writing and directing, solid social commentary, it fires on all cylinders. It's one of my favorite movies of 2023. Speaking of Barbenheimer, I liked They Clone Tyrone more than those 2 films.

I watched these 3 movies on 4/20

Friday - Holds up. Classic stoner comedy with a very strong cast, my favorites were Chris Tucker and John Witherspoon. Just a chill, funny hangout movie.

How High - Maybe an acquired taste. I first watched it as a kid and I stuck with it. It's absolutely stupid and makes no sense, truly a turn-your-brain-off movie, but it's so much fun.

Pineapple Express - Another movie I watched a lot over the years. Also holds up, the comedy still lands for the most part, and the action still manages to be shocking, yet very convincing.
