A few of the games I have burned onto DVD-R's are having difficulties running. Primarily Persona 4, Digital Devil Saga, and Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis.

Persona 4's lag is bearable (no pun intended), but it's kind of annoying because it takes some time for voices to load, and there's lag involved when doing anything besides regular physical attacks.

Digital Devil Saga is probably the least laggy; it only lags occasionally in battle when I use an item or a skill.

In Mana Khemia, the game is nearly unplayable, almost as laggy as the PSP version. Long loading times, bad framerate drops in cutscenes and battles, the whole nine yards.

I don't know what's causing this. I don't think it's the PS2's laser, because all of my other games work just fine. I'm using ImgBurn to write the image files onto the disc, and I always write at a 1-2x speed. I'm using Verbatim DVD-R's (16x, 4.7 GB).

The games are NTSC or PAL?
Which version of SM?

I have never encounter any lag with any game. One thing I did have to do was use cogswap to play a few games that needed a high TOC. The retail game I used was Devil May Cry.
That might be the problem if you have an older version of SM, give cogswap a try.

Swap Magic version 3.6. I've had it for a couple years now and it works like a charm. It's the NTSC-U version for all games, also.

can you check the media ID for the Verbatim that work flawless and compare the media ID with the games that lag.
Believe or not, not all Verbatim disc are of the same quality.

Open Imgburn and select "write image file to disc". Insert the disc [Blank or burned] on the right side you will get a lot of info about the disc, you nee to look for the following: MID and Manufacturer

The media is fine, based on the ID. Not sure why you getting lag.
When did you last update the burners firmware?

Have you tried another brand of DVD? You could try using FMCB and play the games via USB/HDD/Network. That could possibly help you a bit in terms of lag (well USB is slow, but you never know)

Try using DVD+R.

I don't know ps2 lens hardware, but doesn't DVD+R media put more strain to lens compared to DVD-R? Google says Sony supports both standards (DVD-R and DVD+R are different from inside), but some DVD players/lens/devices are meant to read DVD-R, like Wii lens.

The USB route, or internal HDD route might help too (since you own a phat PS2)

The interesting thing about DVD+R is that it's considered as media of a better quality. Some of the consoles can't handle them, some can (my PS2 can't).
Try this link for more info about different types of media: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

I think DVD-r and DVD+R are from different industriy standards. If a gamecube chipped, Wii or PS2 can't handle even properly DVD+R media, who knows.

Any DVD player/DVD-rom Drive should be able to deal with DVD+r but on some game consoles DVD drive units, the wear and tear seems to get worse with DVD+R media.
