Hacking Keep getting stuck while hacking

I've read through and tried a few guides to hacking but I seem to get stuck at some stage or other each time. The last attempt I used the latest ModMii which was going well until I had to install wad's using Multi Mod Manager. At that stage, my controller (Wiimote Plus) wasn't reacting/syncing. I've read that it should work with a GameCube controller, but I don't have one and want to get this done now instead of waiting for one to arrive. So what am I doing wrong and how can I fix it?
The Wii is brand new and uses 4.3E. Other than that, I'm not sure. I'm a noob at this stuff so go easy easy.

Softmod Any Wii Should work with your wiimote.

I only ever use Gamecube controllers for wad management. My Wiimotes tend to sleep way too often.
