I've been out of the wii u mod game for awhile and it recently go updated to 5.5.2... With all the guides (possibly outdated) out there, what's the best current one you recommend?
There's this one, which will take you from stock to CBHC (sig-patches on boot).
Browser exploit isn't recommended as main entrypoint on 5.5.2 as it's so unstable.

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply! I'm assuming that's the only entry point at this time? I have several games I used to play prior to the update via loadiine. I'm assuming this will be the same with a lower success rate?

No, you use the browser entrypoint to install Haxchi, which is a very reliable exploit.

Alright, I got to the point where Haxchi is installed, but when I go to install the homebrew channel with WUP installer, it's saying "Verify WUP files are correct and complete. DLC/E-shop require Sig Patch" Any ideas what's causing this? I have the files in the install/hbc folder.

You need CFW to install the HBL channel. Read through the noob guide. It's regularly updated and explains things a little better than the guide that other user recommended

It's regularly updated
So is mine

I literally rewrote it yesterday
Explains things a little better than the guide that other user recommended
How so?

Why don't you read mine and compare. Yours just has HaxChi and CBHC instructions. Missing lots of info

Like I say in the OP, rather than just tell you what to do I explain every option in detail and then let the user make an informed decision. There isn't a "one size fits all" solution. The noob guide is recognized as the go to solution by this site and many others.

We get users coming here asking questions about their hacks all the time because they followed some other guide and have no idea what they have done. They just followed steps.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also, BIG GIANT red flag with your guide. You have no nand backup step but you recommend CBHC. You're going to have a lot of users jack up and have no way to repair!

Huh, is CBHC really that risky? I'll fix that now
Thanks for the heads up ^_^

EDIT: Done!

Also, my guide does have a list of stuff they can do with their hacks, it's on the first page. http://cfw.guide/wiiu/

a list of what they can do WITH their hack is different from a list of WHAT hack they can do.

for example, your guide tell people to install CBHC.
you don't suggest choices.

You tell users to install channels without giving them choices either.

people could want browser hack, or haxchi, or CBHC, or stay on 5.5.1 (why update?) etc.
giving choices based on understanding what is available is always better.
unless a user only want a blind guide with just steps to follow without understand why they are doing them, but you'll get a lot of threads with the same questions, like "can I update Haxchi after installing CBHC?" "can I update CBHC without removing it first?" etc.
Some brick warning should be required; like "do not format your WiiU ! Ever! if you have CBHC installed", "do not install Haxchi AFTER installing CBHC"

don't get me wrong, guides are great to teach and prevent people from doing anything wrong, but I'm like Kafluke and prefer understanding and choosing than blindly following steps and not knowing what can be or shouldn't be done after that.

You should add at the top of CBHC page that CBHC replaces completely Haxchi.
a lot of people think they have both installed at the same time, and that they need to update haxchi after installing cbhc.
it can brick their consoles ! (that's why doing NAND backup is useful)

explain that it replaces haxchi (or tell it's an update of haxchi, maybe that is easier to understand? but it's not.)
Explain that they should NEVER update or reinstall haxchi if they have CBHC, it will semi-brick (should still be recoverable)
Explain that they should NEVER EVER format their WiiU if they have CBHC, it will full brick !

you don't explain that haxchi can be used as "forwarder" to launch many homebrew, without going into the HBL.
users might want to use haxchi instead of CBHC, just for that feature.
or they might want both (it's possible).
that's just multiple possibilities that straightforward guide never explain, they just "make all consoles clones of others", all hacks are often always identical, not necessarily the best (I do reference to vWii hacking guide, telling ALL users to install wrong cIOS.... and then coming here to get help because it's not working)

Thanks! I've added all those things to it now

@Lia, were not trying to discourage you from writing a guide. It's just that we have spent months on here trying to help people who follow guides from other sites fix and understand what they are doing. Please continue to work on your guide and it will get better every day.

The noob guide on here isn't "my" guide. I started it a long time ago but it has been constantly updated by input from users and has other contibuters than can add and edit.

We feel it is a gbatemp community guide so it's hard when a new user comes here asking for help and then someone points them elsewhere when everything they need is at the top of this forum in the stickies. We can answer to the content of the noob guide on here. We have no control over other users guides and YouTube videos.

We spend a lot of time helping users through mistakes made by following guides that we don't endorse. It gets tiresome

Thanks everyone for the explanations. I'm up and running with Haxchi and CBHC. I do have a few questions. The games I currently have (not downloaded through the Wii U USB Helper) are currently listed in this format; for example, "Hyrule Warriors [BWPE01]" and code/content/meta folders rather than the long ticket string. Is there a way to transfer these and install through the WUP Installer?

Also, I have a 3TB hhd that I had partitioned for the vWii and used a sd card for gamecube. What is the best way to utilized this hdd for all game data (roms for emulators, NES, SNES...etc, and gamecube, wii and wii u games)? Is that possible? Thanks again for all the advice and guides you guys put together.

The games you already have are in loadiine format. Loadiine is the older launcher that we all used before WUP Installer method came out from those crazy Brazilians. You'll either have to redownload with Wii U USB Helper or spend a ton of time converting them (look for loadiine to WUP Installer conversion threads on here). It's just easier to use Wii U USB Helper.

You can't use the same hard drive. You have to have a separate one for Wii U and you can't partition it.
