PS1/2 Just bought a PS2 Slim on impulse!!

I just got a message back from the guy I bought the PS2 from, and he said that it's just a normal cable with no block on it, which from my understanding means the power supply is on the inside. Now according to xist, that means freemcboot won't work, correct?

Correct...that means it's a SCPH 900xx since it has an integrated power supply. The thing you want was like the one in this ebay picture (couldn't find any good images elsewhere...sorry!)

In the main FMCB is a no-no for these consoles, although there has been some debate about the earlier 900XX versions still working with it. Personally i'd chip it though...

Can someone please send me a link to a USB stick that they know works with FMCB from Amazon or Dealextreme? I've tried a few but none have worked. It's one of the launch year consoles so I'm pretty sure it works.

No stick works on it's own...you need software too, which is why there are guides using the Action Replay Max Evo and it's accompanying software.

I know that. I'm using the Action Replay method but the files on the USB never show up properly, I want to know the brand/size of one someone else has used succesfully.

I'd love to be able to chip it, but people have made it sound like it's hell to chip PS2's, so unless someone would do it for me, I don't think I'm going to go that route. I don't really know anyone who's a better solderer than me, and I'm only average. I don't want to break it and have my money completely wasted.

So I think I'm either going to sell the PS2 again and try to get a hackable one, or attempt to find someone to chip it for me. Does anyone know a reliable service or person who'll do that for me for fairly cheap? Also, I have 2 questions if I do get it chipped. First, can I run homebrew if it's chipped? I may want to do that, I don't know. And lastly, can a chipped PS2 run games patched with ESR?

First wait until you get it. There's a small chance you'll have an earlier BIOS that will work with FMCB....if not then worry about chipping it.

Also a hardmod makes ESR patching irrelevant as you can just use burned ISO's and don't have to worry about ESR compatibility lists. Yes you can use homebrew too, although there's not really that much worthwhile to speak of on the PS2.

Don't get a memor32 it is overpriced and you have to modify all your isos to work with it and said above it doesn't work with PSX games so makes it even more not worth the money.

Crystal chip is the best chip money can buy and they ironed out every very last bug it has ever had. Auto boots all media (DVD movie, PS1, and PS2). And generally they are cheap around $20-$30 each.

Crystal chip or nothing for me. A PS2 without a mod chip is a paperweight.

you obliviously never had a soft-modded ps2

you have to jump through a few more hoops but it will do just about everything a chipped ps2 will

Yeah I know I don't need to ESR patch the ISOs if I have a hardmod, but a few ISOs I already have are ESR patched, and I'm just wondering if they'll still work. It would be a pain to have to get them again.

I just bought my own ps2 phat from ebay

with two controlers and a 8mb memory card. All for 45 dollars with shipping. I would love to do use free Mcboot for ripping and playing games from a usb harddrive. The only problem I have come across is the price for action replay max evo. 50+ bucks on ebay. Same for gameshark.

Good buy depends what you paid for shipping... anyways many things you need to know:
1. Forget usb for playing games. you need a network adapter
2. You might want to change the hard drive in the network adapter for a bigger one. so you need that
3. Forget action replay/gameshark just get freemcboot installed from someone (start a new thread asking that) It take REALLY about 1 minute to install so it not a big deal. (Id install it for you but im in canada better get someone in the usa)
Then your set... enjoy freemcboot and its many possibilities

Anyone in this thread capable of making the FMCB for shipping in the US? PM me your address, I managed to buy the AR disc months ago, and it was the NON-MEDIA edition ::rage::... Anyhow I could use your help

The memory card hack, the Memor32, has perfect compatability with almost all games. Well all games that I tried so far that is. The only problem is, is that the compatability with vista is pretty bad. It also can't play ps1 games. The memor32 website is here.
i hope your joking when you said it has perfect compatibility
it has horrible compatibility

it got blow away by Free MCBoot and ESR

Well then you probably did something wrong. Because I have about 30 games here and they all work perfectly. And I'm also running ESR 9 and something else.

So usb doesn't work on the fat? Even with free MCboot?

Ps2 games no longer have online. So why would I need the network adapter?

What type of hard drive does the ps2 use and what size can it take w/o problems? IE over heating.

What do you mean? The HDD and network Adaptor are to different things. Why Would I need the N.Adapter to use a HDD?

Network adapter has the ide and power connector for the hdd on it. Without it, you can't hook the hdd to the ps2.

OP, I reccomend you getting a Free McBoot if your PS2 accepts it, but just remember you need a way to open the .elf file(installation) through a modchip, swap magic, AR, another Free McBoot or anything that loads .ELF files.

Good Luck.
