Pretty much any soldering iron will be good as long as you practice long enough on scrap electronics. Don't even try to mod your 3DS without enough practice first, you'll most certainly destroy it.

The O3DS XL is also way easier than the O3DS, so you should be good on that.

Good luck!

I'll practice first then, I don't want to break my already broken 3ds xl lol. Might have to ask a few colleagues of mine to give me some scrap electronics.

Open up your 3DS, give a good hard look at the size of the solder pads, then practice on stuff with similar size. Keep doing that until you're 100% sure you can attach a wire securely without lifting the pad underneath (that happens if you spend too much time with the tip on the pad).

Personally id say shipping it to someone to mod it for you is most safe if you have NAND backup

Nah, it will be too expensive for me. The 3ds that im talking about is some spare console that was lying around. Anyways, thanks for the tip guys.

Well, if you are quite unsure, you can send your 3ds to a friend of mine over here in the Philippines. Hardmodding is P1,500 shipping not included. But he does it good.

I actually live in in the UAE, but that's cheap, really cheap. Anyways, which place?

paste or liquid? im not really sure about this, I just saw that there are two types upon searching on amazon.
I personally prefer paste, you'll also probably want a desoldering pump/bulb/wick if you plan on soldering more. Good thing to remember with solder is that less is more, you don't need a ton to make good contact. I usually just put a tiny bit on the pad I'm soldering to, then I tin my wire and then use the iron to create contact between the pad and the tinned wire.

Between pumps, bulbs and wick, I personally think they all have their time/place. Wick is good for SMD stuff and really difficult ground pads, pumps are good for removing excess solder with throughhole stuff, and the bulb is about the same as the pump.
