I'm having the popping sound problem on my old 3DS XL, I've searched for similar cases and most of them say it is because of the speaker flat cable.
I disassembled it and after looking for some time I've found a small wear on it. I'm not used to work on these things so I don't know if it is damaged enough to stop working, if not than that's probably not the cause of the problem in my case.
PS: the shoulder where it passes through broke so the cable touched some mildly sharp edges, that is the origin of the weariness. It worked on that state of a very long time but when I was playing it suddenly turned off and the popping sound began.
