These days, nobody does any of that. We all (XP users) have a good firewall and antivirus program running at all times, and if there is a problem that bad just reformat and do a clean install.

Back up your data, reformat, and do a clean install. This time get Comodo firewall.

After reading your attempts at solving the problem, the above solution sounds to be the best option you have at this point.

After months (or years) of installing and uninstalling programs on your PC, your system's registry gets filled up with lots of entries that the computer has to go through all that useless info every time you do anything before it moves on. They NEVER go away. All those registry entries build up and WILL slow down your PC. You COULD try to run some registry cleaners, but unless you know what you are doing with those you might only make various programs you still have installed stop working.

There could be various virus-like spyware programs raging in your system that none of the cleaners you ran know anything about. Those will also slowdown your system. You can attempt to uninstall useless programs you don't use and sometimes that can help because many programs insist on running in the background even when you aren't using them. There is a way to shut them off from booting with the system, but I don't really feel like getting in to how to go about doing that (maybe someone else could explain the whole "Start/run/msconfig/startup" and various other cleanup-type methods to him? I just don't feel like explaining that stuff again for the fifty-billionth time in my life)

But failing all of that, backing up your critical files and reformatting IS your best option.

What is it with people that insist that AntiVirus and Firewalls are the best thing since sex with 2 women at once (was gonna say sliced bread, but my way is much better, lol!!)

I REFUSE to run antivirus, and a firewall! I turn ALL THAT SHIT OFF! My system runs perfectly!

I have 2 rules for me and my wife...

1) don't download anything from a website that you don't know what it is, and never download a .exe/.com/.bat file, EVER!

2) NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER download a .exe/.com/.asf/.wmv file from Limewire... EVER!!

Follow those 2 rules, and your perfectly safe! Not sure if the file you have is a virus? Run it in a VirtualMachine, or run it on a second computer not connected to the internet or home network as a test machine.

Not only do AntiVirus and Firewalls take up WAY too much room on HardDrives, but they slow performance since they are always scanning, and slow your internet connection!

EDIT:
If you want my IP address to try to hack me, I'll be more than happy to let you have it!

Oh my god, finally something we agree upon.

I'm really glad I caught this thread before phantastic did anything drastic.

Luckily for you, I provide a free service to anyone that requests it. I will optimize your system over Netmeeting/VNC.

I provide the following:

+Manual virus/spyware/adware/junkware removal (minimal tool use)
+Enhanced, non-resource taxing security
+System cleanup/slimming
+TCP performance tweaks
+System performance tweaks
+Toolset and software installation/optimization
+Diagnostics

PM me if you or anyone else is interested.

fichju, i just finish burning the miniPE and theres a whole crap load of files. whats the one that is needed to reformat? thanks for the help.

Restart your PC, press F12 during boot and choose CD-ROM as the boot disk. Wait 5 or so minutes, MiniPE will open. Hard Disk Tool > Partition Magic 8

wait so what do i have to do? that thing you just said was so confusing as heck but i got the virus/spyware removal part haha

Ugh, reminds me time I got a new variant of Vundo installed... it was similar to old vundo but different... so my a/v didnt detect it and my firewall didn't stop it.... and it was a torrent from TPB. Now I know to wait for comments before download.

OMG! im trying to install XP SP2 Corporate but then it ask for a serial key. i dont have it! i look at the "bay" site and checked the place where i dl (has the most seeds) and the super key on there doesnt work ahhh now im stuck what i do now? im using another comp right now.

Here's what you need to do...

1) backup all JPG's/MP3's and anything else that you just couldn't ever lose. Burn to CD/DVD if you can.

2) WIPE THE LIVING BAJESUS OUT OF YOUR HD! If you have time, and don't mind, do a DoD wipe. That'll get rid of any trace of any virus! (Search for Ultimate Boot Disc)

A DoD wipe is a very good thing to do, yet will take a VERY LONG TIME on large hard drives. It'll write nonsense data to every last sector of your HD (basically, overwriting everything, even free space on your drive) then writes all 0's... basically blanking out the drive, leaving nothing. Then repeats itself 3 to 4 more times. There will be absolutely nothing left, and it cannot be recovered, even by the FBI.

3) Install Windows (XP SP2 if possible)

4) ...

5) Get a bootable Antivirus disc. Scan the backup disc you made, and make a note of any infected files... if you have any infected files, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND SATAN, DON'T PUT THEM BACK ON YOUR COMPUTER!!!!

6) Get back to pirating!

i reformatted my comp first though so now i cant even use the computer without installing this program

Check your PM's...

Personally - before a format I would try the following as it ahs fixed several machines for me in the past. Especially that pesky "userinit.exe failed to initialse" error when you geta certain virus / trojan - do a search if you wish and you will see a number of people hit with that one and generally your are told to format and start again - HOWEVER, this has fixed that issues and others.

Click on the following link ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/launch.exe to download an easy use app to run an express scan (which auto starts when you load the app and click OK) on your computer to check for any current threats you may have. (Takes anywhere up to 10 minutes to complete) If nothing gets picked up then it is highly likely you do not have a virus. If it picks up the file it deletes and if if it can't it will state a restart is required to remove the file properly.

After the simple scan is completed run a complete scan - which may take a few hours - but will do a thorough scan of all files on your computer. This once picked up over 95,000 infiected files on a friends computer. This spftware works a treat for me and has saved many friends PC's.

you could have just grabbed winrar and manually searched and destroyed all those viruses

You said in the OP that all you noticed was that the PC was running 10 times slower than usual. I don't think its a virus, it might just be windows itself. Windows tends to run slower the longer you have it installed.

I'd suggest you get CCleaner and run it. Then get a program which allows you to change the startup programs(Tweaknow Powerpack is good but you have to pay for it.) and just reduce the amount. Then go and defragment your drive. If you want to, go and run some Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware scans to get rid of any malware or adware.

It is important for you to do so because even if you reinstall windows, the problems will come back. You need to learn to take care of your install so you can space out the amounts of reinstalls you do. My last install was over 5 months ago and its still running smooth.

for the record SuperAntiSpyware is a rogue spyware removal tool so uninstall it!

recommended tools you already have SPYBOT S & D make sure you update it then scan!

also i use SPYWARE TERMINATOR 2 freeware link ... also remember to update once installed!

another good tool is SMITREM get it here latest version is 3.2 ... run it in safe mode for best results
smile.gif

finally use ADAWARE free version to remove anything else thats there
smile.gif

when you have removed it all and sure its all gone then clean out your SYSTEM RESTORE points as virii can lay hidden in restore points and comeback later if you use a restore
frown.gif

in xp its under right click my computer/properties/system restore tick the box to turn of system restore and then apply wait a couple of seconds for it to turn off then tick the box again to reapply the system restore function and click apply again
smile.gif

this will remove any system restore points and start it again so theres nothing lurking
smile.gif

remember all ANTI VIRUS programs /removal tools spyware tools etc etc need updating before use ... antivirus works best updated DAILY as new stuff can be released DAILY!

EDIT :-

addtional ekrn.exe Is a NOD32 BACKGROUND PROCESS this will hog upto 75% or more of system resources!

it could be doing a BACKGROUND scan almost constantly if not stopped from auto scanning!

suggest using something OTHER than NOD32 as its pretty JUMPY with false positives anyhow
