Ah, the easy A or B decision for the informed consumer.
How about we layer on top of that, that because you update now, and will have to depend on a HW solution later, the risk of you being banned later might actually increase?
Or that the HW based solution might be more cumbersome to use for quite a while. But also faster.
Or that modchips will void your warrenty and might not be needed for those who wait?
So how much do you want to update? And before you answer that, let me stop you right there, because we are not interested in providing a personalized "should you update" service, based on your needs and likes to everyone that would find that pretty neat. Because you did no work, we did all of it. You gave nothing, we provided all of it - kind of thing.
This would end in support communities - which we don't want, and arent payed to run.
If you can give back nothing - even in 10-12 months time, because all you ever did was asking "and what should I do now" questions, at very random, and inopportune times (nothing for the "mainstream" enduser above 3.0.0 has been released yet), it really doesn't help out the community much.
Its like going to the bakery in the morning, asking for a croissant - but really not caring for the backer at all. The interaction over time will not work, unless you give something back that hes interested in. Your money. And no - I'm actually not interested in your money - but maybe a blogger, or (I dont believe I'm saying this), a youtuber is. But also - if you give some to a dev, don't believe, that this will buy you service. Homebrew devs usually don't come with service centers attached. Thats actually the issue here - no one wants to be in service, no one wants to pay for service, but everyone wants perfect service - for their quetions. No one knows how to solve this on scale.
Their best bet currently is to bank on people who volunteer for free and give them entirely fake reputation benefits in the form of useless ranks or points. For some reason some people like to acquire more and more of those... Then maybe organize a community meeting once every year and give them free pizza. Very economical.
I'm more inclined to say - when hearing "I wan't to play online - on closed systems" start thinking about a situation, where you are willingly allowing the company trying to prevent all this to actively update every part of your system they can - at all times. At which point I'm actually going directly into "humankind really has lost it" debate mode, because in terms of power struggles, letting one party into your life, rewriting all new rules for you to adhere to - every week, every month - normally means, that you have given away all control to whats happening in your life.
Its like proudly proclaiming, "I want all the benefits, with none of the setbacks!" And I don't know who has told you that you can haz this, in life (probably a markeing shill), but usually...
Also if you are that far removed from the inner workings of a hacking scene but want this question answered whenever you want, regardless of whats going on around you - I recon, that you are very happy in the Nintendo ecosystem after all, and just wan't free icecream at the end of your meal. From those people you only come to to ask if you can haz free icecream.
At which point, I'm not sure - if telling you everytime you ask what your chances for free icecream are this lovely summers day - is in the interest of everyone in here.
edit: Now what would work - is asking a question once, maybe twice, or threetimes - then banking on someone giving a satisfactory answer, which more people could read and understand - there by not having to ask that question themselves.
Sadly - thats not at all how millenials work these days. They have learned that everyone will respond with a smile and a productive answer if they ask something in facebook environments. Then they say thank you and bank on sending them a christmas card will set the level straight again. Especially if they wear a very funny hat. Also, personal assistance is very much in demand in their lives. From "I'll never visit that restaurant again!" to "Alexa play some cool music" - thats usually most peoples approach - to live.
Now - this comment is really long winded and boring, maybe even depressing to a fault...

I have to admit.
