I'm the type of student who can get A's on assignments and tests without a good work ethic or any studying (always exceptions. Plus, I'm terrible at writing essays). As cool as that would make anyone feel, I have to stop as soon as I can. A bad work ethic gives you hell in college. If you're going to take any AP's (not sure what they're called in Canada, but they're college classes), do all of your work given to you earlier than the night before it's due (unless it's obviously homework due the very next day). Try to have and create a good work ethic.
Get into the discussion of your classes, it'll help you to actually learn the material instead of memorize it as if you were a robot. Get involved in school to keep it fresh, because it get's incredibly boring sometimes.
Be social, but don't be stupid. Someone else already expanded on this, so I won't say anymore.
Ask questions! Always ask if you don't understand something!
EDIT: I'm a junior (third year) in high school. My classes (besides Woodshop) are challenging, but very doable.
