I recently read a thread were some users where discussing if using all the means they had to win a competitive game was acceptable or not, a good example of that is the "Snaking" on Mario Kart DS or L-canceling on Super Smash Bros Melee.
While these are available techniques included in the games, they can be abused to achieve a massive advantage and leave the other players biting the dust, specially if you are playing with people that don't play said game that often or simply don't have the skill needed to use the techniques.
I also need to made a separate mention to exploitable glitches like Mario Kart 7 Maka Wuhu/Wuhu Loop shortcuts and Wavedashing on Super Smash Bros Melee, is available for everyone to use but aside from the difficulty, practice and skill it's a glitch.

Do you think that players should use such advanced techniques used every time they can or just reserve them for serious matches with skilled enough people??

If you ask me, I think using advanced techniques to crush your opponents just because you can isn't very nice and spoils the fun for them. I usually go easy(or test new strategies) with my friends if they aren't experienced.

In the examples you've given I'd say it's more or less fair game. Exploiting however is not something I'd approve of.

I could never get the snaking shit to work at all (I mean, that power boost only works once every five times I try.. and I'm not that bad I think...), so I got bored of Mario Kart DS. But as long as it's part of the game (and not glitching and stuff) then it's alright! :)

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women

Going full pro when it's obvious you're playing against beginners isn't cheating but it is being a dick.

Only if the creators of the game have given us a good reason to believe that the technique in question is a glitch.

Think about it this way. If you're playing some (American) football with some friends and for some reason a pro from the NFL (maybe he's a cousin or something), is it cheating that he'll be able to dominate you? Or is it simply a matter that he's in an entirely different higher skilled level of the game than you likely ever will be. It's not cheating if you dominate at the game in question if you aren't breaking any rules, plain and simple. You want to be able to compete with these people? Train yourself, do what it takes to be a master of anything in life, practice, learn, and get better. And repeat endlessly.

I think it depends. Stuff like wavedashing and snaking are fine by me. They just take skill and don't give such a massive advantage that it ruins the game. Only thing I have a problem with is with games like minecraft where people go and exploit glitches to clone rare items and cheat them in.

of course if he(the NFL pro) tackles you with all he has you'll be sending to fly out of the park, but the thing is that he doesn't need to go full to win the game. is more a thing of being friendly and don't abuse of your power when isn't necessary.

Exploiting a bug might encourage the devs to release a fix if enough people complained about it. I would rather address how cheating/exploiting addresses an individual's experience with a campaign; at what point does it start ruining the game for yourself, etc. For instance, I learned cheating ruins campaigns with Doom 2 years ago.

Oh absolutely, but that doesn't change the fact that he wouldn't be cheating if he did put all his might into tackling you. Sure its a bit unsportsman-like, but lets compare this to something less physical and more mental: If you are on Jeopardy, and you've got the benefit of being a very very smart person with a large education and expansive knowledge of pop-culture and everything in between, you could have 10s of thousands of dollars coming your way in that game, while the other two contestants didn't even break 1000. Are you cheating by having the knowledge that the others don't? Is it wrong that you're trying to make the most money you can even though you're leaving your competitors in the dust? Of course not, people play to win, you can't fault them for that, and as wrong as no rules are being broken, its hard to fault someone for wanting to be the best (like no one ever was).

    Story time!

I remember one time i was playing WOW on a private server and it was a Capture the flag round on twin peaks. I was playing a strong Healer and we had an undergeared team, the oppenents had a MUCH stronger team and quickly took a 1-0 lead. Now its important to note that if the round ends in a draw, the most recent team to cap a flag cap wins. So that became the plan.

I took the flag (Being the most likely to survive an assault) and managed to get all the way back to our base but it was pointless since they already had another of our flags and we couldnt cap without first returning our flag, so i had an idea. I Told my team to ALL go and get the flag back and hope that i could last long enough for them to return it... I Couldnt, They sent 2/3 of their team after me BUT i had a trick up my sleeve. I knew the doorway to our base was not scripted correctly (Private server) meaning that you couldnt target inside the base from outside and vice versa, so i stood in the doorway. constantly going in and out and healing and they couldnt do enough damage on one side of the door to kill me and return the flag. My team eventually managed to return the flag and i managed to goblin jump (I totally did) my way to cap the flag. That turned out to be the winning cap.

Long story short: Exploiting is not cheating. Its just incredably cheap and makes everyone (Who isnt on your tean) hate you. lol

For me cheating is when it affects other players. Using a code to give you unlimited energy really only hurts your challenge.
(That said, I had a friend that was literally cheating at every game, I'm still unsure how you can enjoy any game like that, but each their own).

When it comes to online its iffy, because then it's not only your game, your enjoyment, but other's as well.
Abusing techniques or exploits is, sadly, not cheating as far as the game coding goes. Exploits are admittedly unintended results, it's similar to certain glitches in games that makes things more easy. You sometimes don't realize they are glitches and use them because it does make it a lot easier, so you think it's a strategy. Hell, Nintendo Power was showing some of these bugs as valid winning strategies back in the days.

Now that online gaming is full swing and hot fixes commonplace, exploits are usually usually patched as game balance. But if they are not fixed, it might be because there are some easy way to counter it as well. Aka, working as intended.

If it's in the game, it's fair to do.
You can't abuse a technique. Exploits should be patched, if not, use them. Your opponent probably will even if you don't.

in your example is totally fair as you are not using any glitch, advanced technique or anything to make the game easier for you, you are using your own knowledge and not abusing any game mechanic.

Well how do you not make the argument that using your knowledge to utilize an advanced technique isn't the same thing? Moreover, how is it really that different, in both situations the group of players come in with different sets of knowledge: one knows how to use their quick fingers and mind working in tandem to utilize advanced techniques within the game, one knows how to use their mind to access facts that others don't know.

Because knowledge is what jeopardy is all about. Glitches are not what videogames are about.

If you can do it in the game, it's fine in my book. Heck, it even gives an incentive for bad players to find and learn the techniques.
