8GB is usable, and you will be able to use it for CFW and homebrew. However, you won't be able to hold a lot of games on it (depending on the games, you will be able to hold 0-2 games on it). You will pretty much be limited to the internal storage for games (less than 32GB), and that's not very much either.

If you want to be able to hold games on your SD card, you should probably have 128GB or more (256GB or more is recommended).

I have a friend who wants to homebrew the switch and get cfw on it. They are wanting to know if 8gb's are ok for it. No they do not want emummc
It's enough to hack the system but not much more. Games need a lot of space.
Also, they should reconsider emuNAND because once you run CFW and install NSPs on sysNAND there is no going back to a clean NAND if they don't have a clean NAND backup from before they did anything. So they can never go online safely, even just to get updates for their legit games.

They don't care now, that doesn't mean they won't change their mind later or they are trying to sell the console and realize a console that can't go online is worth a lot less than one that can.

Not all update NSPs are available.

They won't be able to get a NAND Backup which is very important. If they mess up something with the system, it may result in a bad situation. Just at least make them buy a 32 GB SD.

For only homebrew and CFW? Sure. For running games? They will need to heavily rely on either the internal memory or an HDD if they're planning on buying SX OS.
