1st gen models are are well hacked with http://www.rockbox.org/ being the main focus of such things for most people playing in this work.
The 2nd gen had some stuff a few weeks back ( http://hackaday.com/2009/09/11/linux-via-i...ut-for-nano-2g/ ) but it is a bit clunky.

As you mentioned for linux for the sake of others reading

I just installed Rockbox. Are there any apps I can run on it?

There's a bunch installed already, they run as plugins.
Thanks, I didn't know they were already pre-installed. One more question: how do I exit out of a plugin without hard resetting?

On rockbox, you drag and drop music, go to some setting menu and rebuild the database. iTunes music is inside hidden folders, so if you unhide it with your pc you can see them in rockbox.

If i remember correctly you can hold menu or play or something when rebooting to go back to the iPod firmware

I got my iPod to show up if iTunes after loading into the original firmware, however, it won't allow me to add any songs. Is there anyway I can keep my library of songs I have without having to start from scratch?

From what I can remember a few years ago, there is a way, but I can't remember what you had to do.

Hey I have a question. I used to have all of this installed and I removed it. I finally found my ipod again and wanted to install it, but it can't install the boot loader on my ipod nano 1g.

Is there a way I can fix this?

Nevermind I fixed it.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
