Alright so here's the situation.
My brother recently got an iPhone 4 and he gave me his old 3g one.

I already have a phone and can't support paying for a data plan but I want to use it as an iPod touch basically.
Right now it runs pretty slow on Ios 4. whatever its on now. 1 I think.
I'm capable of jailbreaking it I was just wondering what steps I should take.

Should I downgrade to a 3.x os to make it faster? then jailbreak it?
And will this effect getting new apps from the iTunes store?

Basically right now I turned off the 3g, the phone access, and I leave it in Airplane mode.
Is there a more simple way to effectively disable the phone part of it after jailbreaking it?

You need te shsh blobs to downgrade to 3xx.you can jailbreak 4.0 using star or limera1n or greenpois0n.you can get a app in cydia that basicly let's you disable all the phone parts.I can't remember what it's called.

You can certainly downgrade your iPhone 3G to 3.x. Downgrading will likely result in a 101x error, though. (This is expected; just use TinyUmbrella to get out of Recovery Mode.) If it results in a 3xxx error, SHSH blobs are missing. (If this is the case, using a custom firmware should work.)

Your ability to get apps from the App Store should not be affected, though some newer apps may require 4.0 or later.

As for disabling the phone features... keeping the SIM card out will disable the phone features too.

(Though I'm not exactly certain of whether it disables the cellular antenna.)

Alright thanks guys, still trying to find a fast place to download it from :/ only getting about 60kb/s from my current one.

What would be the best program to jailbreak it at 3.1.3 with?

Alright thanks, I'm waiting about another hour for the firmware to download.

Any good jailbreak apps you'd recommend.
I know there is a thread on it, I'm about to go there. But just personal opinions.

Spirit is definitely the easiest, but may require a lower version of iTunes.

Personally, I like that redsn0w "pwns" your device, allowing custom boot logos and restoring to custom firmwares. However, redsn0w 0.9.4 requires you to download iOS 3.1.2 for the iPhone 3G.

Do any emulators currently work for it?

I've used redsn0w before on an iTouch.

What all would having a custom firmware offer me on an iPhone?

Alright I got it to work.
Ofcourse it crashed the first time and I had to fight iTunes for 10 minutes to restore it, and restore my iPhone to previous settings.

Please enlighten me on the Custom firmwares now.

Custom firmwares let you restore to a pre-jailbroken state. A custom firmware offers low-level customization of your device; you can set custom boot logos on your iPhone 3G, block your phone's baseband from being updated (useful for unlockers), and pre-install Cydia software.
