iOS 6 still sucks

Thanks for such an informative post.

To elaborate:

-Apple stole "do not disturb" (a cydia extention) and integrated it into ios claiming they created it.
-Still does not fix 4th gen iPod calibration issues
-threw away google map design and made their own
-Integrated Facebook (a bad tactic IMO)
-added more privacy infringing extensions to run at startup

The notion that Apple "stole" the do not disturb feature is a feasible one. There are numerous tweaks in Cydia that offer similar or identical functionality, and they have been there before iOS 6 beta 1 was even released. This one is particularly bad considering how Apple files lawsuits on even the broadest of claims (i.e. rectangles with rounded corners), but when they take an idea that someone has already implemented effectively and use it themselves, everyone seems to turn a blind eye. I suppose the spirit of most of the tweaks was to make the iPhone better and not for monetary gain or some sense of "independence", so it's not all that bad.

The fact that Apple has released a major new iOS and didn't fix a major flaw is inherently worrysome, and you should care even if you don't own the device in question. It means they can overlook things. Major things. I've heard reports of devices being unable to connect to Wi-Fi networks through Safari on iOS 6, which is also a very major issue that should have been worked out in the half-a-dozen betas they went through. An issue this major that affects every device only supports the initial point that flaws being overlooked are worth noting for every user, not just specific ones. There are flaws. Some don't affect you. Some do. Care about them, regardless.

Google Maps had numerous features that the new Maps.app is without, like subway and bus routes. I've heard numerous reports of the new maps app also simply being unable to find numerous addresses. Throwing out a tried-and-true method is a thing that Apple has every right to do, but if they try to replace it, and they do a poor job, it should be pointed out. I, personally, have never used Maps.app anyways, so I can't give you any personal stories, but a lot of people around the internet seem pretty unhappy.

Integrated Facebook doesn't sound remotely bad to me, as long as it doesn't get in the way of other features. It probably doesn't.

Privacy infringement is pretty serious, or at least a lot of people seem to think so. If someone doesn't care about their privacy, then there's no sense in trying to sell them on the issue, but for someone to say something like "good for them!" in response to adding operations that hundreds of thousands of users are uncomfortable with is just childish.

Ugh... I see you don't have a problem with all your data being sent to them.
Facebook is becoming a gensucker that needs to die off. That is just my opinion, no need to rage about that.

"iPod comment" it doesn't affect you, yet the fact they don't fix their old products creates the fact it may affect you someday.

On any jailbroken device check up on DoNotDisturb and DoNotDisturb2

No, I really don't have a problem with them collecting data on me. In this day and age there is no such thing as "privacy" any more. The only true privacy you might still have is sitting on the shitter in your own home with the door closed.

I'll agree with you on Facebook. I only post pics on there for family and such and could careless if it was around or not. I'll also add that if someone wants to waste their time there then so be it. It is no different then someone wasting their time on GBAtemp. *ends rage*

Yeah, "iPod comment" still doesn't affect me.

I don't jailbreak any more so I won't be checking that out. Also just because you say they stole it ( this goes for the poster above you too) thats just an accusation and with out any proof it is a baseless one at that. That statement by you two alone just screams "fanboy haters" just take that shit some where else. I'm fucken tired of seeing it.

By your logic any OS advancement is stolen.

I don't think adding a feature to your OS as simple as Do Not Disturb can be considere stolen. Also as for Facebook integration, don't like it you don't have to use it. Is somebody forcing you to use Facebook? No. So stop fucking bitching about goddamn nonsense.

What I consider "stolen" would be Notification Center. But that's more influenced by Android.
Or, S-Voice. That's a 1-to-1 copy of Siri(not to say Siri was an original concept to begin with)

I just want to add that having used it myself a shit ton in the last year that Google maps on the iPhone did suck balls and it needed to go. I'm glad to see that they went with turn by turn navigation.

Apple decidedly thought otherwise about "Slide to unlock", which had been done before they did it.

Come on plasma dragon don't add to the drama, but I would have to agree with you.

I'm not saying I agree with them. I think the lawsuits are silly too.
Also, the Do Not Disturb was a jailbreak tweak. For all you know Apple could've hired the developer(unlikely) like that did with the guy who originally made the new iOS notifications.
Jailbreak tweak developers make tweaks in order to make iOS better. They'd be HAPPY if Apple made them native.

Any advancement to your OS that has already been done by someone else and replicated by your team without permission is stolen. And a feature as simple as Do Not Disturb can't be considered stolen? We used to think the same thing about rounded corners, or the outline of a phone on a Phone app, or a 4x4 grid. Apparently we were wrong, or so said some court that was biased toward a company based in its country. That's neither here nor there. Anything, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, can be stolen, and, if the developer was charging for the tweak, Apple has, in effect, slaughtered that developer's market.

It's worth noting that Apple has a history of copying tweaks from the jailbreak community and even apps from the App Store. Folders, backgrounding, and a Notification Center-like interface were all available in Cydia before iOS 4 (or 5 for NC), and the ability to send SMS messages via IP (like iMessage) had been implemented by numerous apps in the App Store, and those aren't even limited to texting only other iDevices more often than not. [I could be wrong, but Skype may have included video chat on iPhone before FaceTime existed, as well] They do it all the time. They think they're entitled to other people's ideas, but other are not entitled the their ideas, even if someone else had the idea first.

You said it yourself. Apple could have hired the developer to work for them and implement the feature. They could have just went up to the developer and asked for permission, or they could have worked out a deal with them. If they didn't, then the feature is stolen.

Google is working on the iOS Maps btw, now pending approval,

I'm so far quite happy with iOS 6 on my iPhone 4S, some advantages:
- generally smoother than iOS 5 and Safari is a lot faster in rendering.
- Panorama mode, albeit lower quality.
- The redesigned App Store does not require any more keying in of Apple ID all the time.
- Turn by turn actually works
- The new Siri functions are nice, Mandarin Siri and dictation works like a charm.

However:
- It seems that the Ambient Light Sensor doesn't work anymore.
- Maps are somewhat inaccurate at times. I tried searching for Marina Square (near the Casino) but it gave me a location near the catchment areas.
- The on/off switches are a lot more difficult to trigger.
- Siri for Cantonese is quite bad. I have my dad and my friend from Hong Kong try it out and it mostly gives "I don't understand..."

To me, Flyover and the other features unavailable at certain regions isn't considered a flaw. So I won't add that in.

The Apple Maps issues are hilarious. I understand all the 3D rendering bugs though. Basically anywhere they haven't made a specific map they use basic elevation information which results in weird looking points where their 3D models suddenly stop. Shouldn't excuse the melting bridges though!

I haven't used iOS6 and never will (I have a 3rd Gen iPod which doesn't get the update for arbitrary reasons). It seems like a decent enough update, severes ties with Google a bit and improves the interface in small ways. iOS is getting insanely stale though, that 4x4 Grid is looking very static and uninteresting these days and putting all the different app settings in the Settings app is just adding more steps to do things like enter private browsing mode in Safari. The Weather icon is still stuck saying 73 degrees and Sunny rather than having any kind of live update (which wouldn't be hard to implement). iOS needs to make itself more like Android in some respects. An ability to set a default web browser would be nice for a start.

Btw are Siri's location services still only available in the USA?

Apple Maps tells me that Solihull, a big nearby town, doesn't exist and that I have a nearby Woolworths.

At what point did someone say "This is totally fine to release to the public", and just what the hell were they drinking?

Im amused that in the center of Warsaw (capital of Poland) there's a park named all in Japanese characters. I don't know it's name, but I'm sure it isn't "薩克森花園"
I'll have to check Google Maps and send Apple a correction note

We need to remember that a new mapping service takes time to get as good as Google's has gotten. It used to be pretty damn crap at the beginning too. Then again Google didn't put their brand new mapping service front and centre on one of the most popular smartphones in the world, did they?

That's the main problem I think, it's clearly a BETA software and Apple market it as a finished product.

By the way am I the only one who suffer from some lag and slowdown on IOS6 with an iPod touch 4, feels like the iPhone 3G when it got IOS4... :(

I've been using iOS6 on my iPhone 4 since beta. I have to admit that Apple did an amazing job. Even on A4 the system isn't laggy, just loads stuff a little bit slower. Only the battery life is lacking...

I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
