I would just copy the files from the smaller sd card

Makes sense ;) thx!

Guess I'm good to go when it arrives then.

I will follow the guide that's sticky here on the forum. Is there any steps you guys would skip for the setup I'm going to give my brother? I'm already skipping the backup step because I don't have the 64gb card.

Don't skip the backup step. You can skip mlc.bin but get at least otp.bin and seeprom

Otp.bin and seeprom are small. But they're the most important files when fixing a brick if you ever need to

Edit:
Forgot to ask about the vc games. I got confused from the early reply :/

Will I install vc snes and nes games same way as the wii u titles? With wup and wii u helper for download?

There's actually a ton of ways to do vc games. Injects, Wii u USB Helper, vWii, nintendont, loadiine (one of the only things I ever use loadiine for anymore)...

The thing is you gotta see what works best for you. That's what's different about gbatemp, we don't just present you with a zipped up SD card and a step by step to perform the hack that WE pick for you.

It's better to ask questions, read through the constantly updated guides here and learn what it is your actually doing. This makes troubleshooting much easier later on when we can give you suggestions and you understand our steps

I understand, and I love to see how much work and time you guys spend making these guides for people like me. I'm no newbie to computers and consoles in general, so think I will get this to work also. Just trying to gather some ideas and thoughts before the big hack day comes :)

My biggest question where answered better than I imagined it would be, and I even learned more!

If the machine where for me to use, I would go all in with many games and all kinds of retro vc. That's me.
But this is for a 8 year old, that's why I wanted to find the best (easiest) way for me to do it :)

if its an 8yo you probably will need cbhc for atleast boot the vc games on menu on boot unless you actualy bought them legit, for retail games and such you can use the brazilian method so you dont need cfw to launch them but for vc stuff you will need cfq or homebrew channel to launch cfw.

As I understand, installing with wup it will be available from wii menu?
Still reading through the guide again and again, if the vc games gets to difficult for me I have to skip that part :(

Also... Im sitting at home now, trying to download games with wii u helper.
From there I can find for example New super mario bros u + Luigi (14,6gb), can't find new super luigi on its own!?

Hi, i too have been installing games for my 8 years old nephew.

What i can say to you is that everything is easy and simple. At first it will seem complicated, but just read the guide and ask everything you need here.

And for New Super Luigi, just get the New Super Mario Bros. U + *THE DLC* in the WiiU USB helper. The DLC will be Luigis game, and will be way lighter that way. (700MB IIRC)

By the way i strongly recommend the Haxchi method for you. My nephew just need to click Haxchi once every console reboot and then he can play any game he wants.
But i DONT reccomend doing the ColdBoot. But thats only my opinion.

-EDIT-

Another important thing. If you gonna use the old HDD to install the games you WILL NEED a Y-cable for the HDD. Otherwise you will have problems.

Also there is a secret menu to turn off some power saving thing for the HDD, that will help too. You should find easily a video thats shows how disable it.

Thank you, sounds great. That's the game I downloadet already, with an update and dlc :)

I am gonna go with that method, seems like the best one. So you just press haxchi and then all things open fine from wii menu, also vc games?

I think I'm starting with the sysnand for games, the guy I bought the wii from had Mario maker legit disc, he sent that also. So I only need to install 4-5 games :) and if tekken is the deal breaker for space. I just tell him no, and then he can have to more smaller sized games ;)
