I'm taking a shot in the dark as I never have tried it.

You could try use IRC and connect to bitlbee with this IRC client.

Maybe use ebuddy with opera mini or another internet browser if possible as well.

Afkim also does all of that Here I haven't got it to work however... luckily you can change it's details and stuff to work with bitblee but I haven't tried it yet, or it could be a port issue *shrugs* but this was so far the best messenger that I could find that was recently updated within 2 years.

*EDIT* It seems all you gotta do is change the cfg to point to the new bitblee url and what not SO I'll go ahead and tinker with it now and try to get it working. I actually downloaded this a few days ago and was going to fix it then but I was lazy.

*EDIT AGAIN*
Turns out it works just fine but I had to update the app. Download here

That version of AFKIM works! However the input method's pretty retarded.

So I'm gonna' try another IRC client. ^^;

EDIT: The one boxshot linked uses the same input, so I'll try another.

You "can" use a IR keyboard but that requires a PSP 1000, either way I agree it's kind of retarded you can't use the PSP's keyboard.

You can use pspkvm and install ebuddy (its what I use right now). I've also used shmessenger on pspkvm and that worked fine

Wow what a neat idea, I didn't think of java based stuff or anything like that except maybe flash or internet based IM's(but I'd rather have a homebrew app). I think I'll try out ebuddy or shmessenger. I wonder what else would work though? surely there must be other java apps like those that work with PSP.

*EDIT* speaking of internet based IM's, while browsing ebuddy I found this http://m.ebuddy.com/ which is just another internet browser IM.

Face button + analogue to select a letter? It's the best you can get, you should try Skype on PSPKVM, it's a major pain in the neck compared to this.
Plus, you can see what people are typing, so major +++
