I have a gamecube that does the full intro animation and then goes into a screen saying to set the time. After a couple seconds a red "an error has occurred" screen pops up. I'm not sure what the problem is, I've tried swapping parts from another faulty gamecube but no dice. Should I do the picoboot mod and hope that it'll give me more information? For example, if the disc drive is broken, Swiss should bypass that, right? Would this work or would it be a waste of time?

Sorry, I think I worded my question weirdly. I’m not running any burnt media, the console won’t boot up. It just stays at the error screen. Would installing picoboot bypass this and allow me to troubleshoot?

GC IPL will indeed error if it cannot detect a disc drive.
If you install picoboot and swiss, the drive doesn't need to be there, so, yes, that would allow you to use the GameCube.
