So I have downloaded a VC WAD, installed it through the WAD manager and it shows up as a channel.
So far, so good.
Now when I try and launch it, my Wii goes into this weird state where it freezes (no error message) but the remote stays on.
From here I can only restart it.
Any idea what the issue could be?

Thx!

Probably a badly dumped Wad / badly installed Wad.

Most unlikely a cIOS error.

Have you tried downloading the same WAD from another source?

Had the same thought. I did actually but the result was the same. Tried a different game, same sh*t...

It's very, very likely that even though you've downloaded from different sources at the end it's the same faulty wad.

Can we know which wad you're trying to install?

Trying to install Samurai Shodown and Art of Fighting
I see...

Well... I'm going to give you two hints and you decided which to use.

Hint Number 1:
There is a Google Drive link somewhere, that has the entire WiiWare/Virtual Console collection in wad format.
I've personally used it and I hadn't run into any problems using those wads.

Hint Number 2:
There's a Retroarch Core for Wii that lets you play Large Neo Geo Roms. I've been using that Retroarch Core to play all the Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, King of Fighters roms on my Wii.
If you're interested in this Retroarch Core, just look it up here on the Temp and follow the instructions given by the Original Poster.

As far as I know, those wads doesn't use any cIOS in particular, so is very likely that it's a badly dumped wad.

I'll take both haha. Thx! As for Retroarch. I am familiar with it from other consoles and was very happy with it. I tried using it but it will not find any ROMS whatsoever on my external HDD. Is there a more reliable build I should use?

I've been using the version 1.7.5 for some years now.
I've never had any problems with it.
The cores it comes with are the ones I'm using for all consoles except NeoGeo and CPS3.
The cores you want to use for NeoGeo and CPS3 are the ones in the thread I've just told you.
I'm going to leave that exact thread here so you don't have to look it up: https://gbatemp.net/threads/large-neogeo-games-support-and-cps3-tests.493767/

Just follow the instructions.
Please, do not try to use any Retroarch versions of the branch 1.8.X... as they've never worked for me at all.
They won't load anything, not even the cores. At least that's what my personal experience with 1.8.X but feel free to use test it for yourself if you want to.
Again:
  • The Retroarch version I suggest you to use is 1.7.5.
  • Do not use Retroarch 1.8.X
  • For NeoGeo and CPS3 use the cores in the thread I gave you

Appreciate it! I'll try and will report.
If you really feel like reporting your findins, do it in the thread I gave you, as I think (I THINK) they're discussing that issue there.

I haven't been there for a while now.

So I found a new site for wads, let's call it Luigi's block... Same issue. WAD gets installed, I try and run it, blackout. Never thought this could be SO complicated....

Took the WADs directly from their Gdrive. Crashes...
Then... my guess is that it's either your Wad Installer or remotely unlikely cIOS missing?

I just remembered that you're trying to install NeoGeo Virtual Console games...
At this point, I'd opt for Retroarch.

I understand that having the Wads installed would be cool, and at some point I had them installed, but if you really care about playing the games instead of "having them" then use Retroarch.

Strangely enough, I found a WAD from some random kid that posted a video on YouTube. THAT one works.

It doesn't have to be WAD. It just seemed more convenient. Seemed...

LOL imagine the probabilities of having the same faulty WAD all over the internet except on one Youtube video.
Glad you've solved the issue.

Just puzzles me that one random WAD off some kid works and "reputable" ones don't. I'll try and get RetroArch working. F*ck theWADs lol

Yes WADs kinda sucks.

This is why I personally have installed just WiiWare wads, and "Virtual Console" games are being played on Retroarch.

Followed your advice, got RA 1.7.5, have all the cores. Tested it for a few minutes, so far great. SNES works, but NeoGeo still throws me off. I load the core, load the zip, but it gets me back to the RA menu saying no content. Anything I need to fix here? Tested the same rom from 2 different sites.
