I think this would be a good idea.
I disagree with getting new Pokemon via trading cards, though. That's lame and unfair to those who get Pokemon by catching and trading. The interesting thing is having two cards on the ground and two Pokemon appear engaging in a fight. I would like that! They could even make a TCG using augmented reality like this.

I'm sure the demonstration wasn't realtime. It just didn't seem like it was. It was like it acted on queue with the demonstrator pressing a button or something, without any lag or anything.

It was realtime. There is no reason to push a button since the software is able to recognize stored images of the cards via camera and their orientation to each other relatively quickly, which is all that is shown in this video. The software was written by Total Immersion, which also made a AR USS Enterprise from Star Trek (www.experience-the-enterprise.com) and AR for the Avatar toys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JWk_JIE3Ow).

Sorry, but this is just a bad idea. I already have to spend (if I legally buy) $35 for a Pokemon game on the DS. But some people want to spend $70 for both games in that collection (like Black and White, Red and Blue, etc). Plus you'll have to buy slightly older games to get all the Pokemon, not to mention drive out to miscellaneous Pokemon events just to get one Pokemon. You also need two DS's as well. Buying lame trading cards and scanning them for getting a Pokemon sounds like an idea that would've been presented in the series of fad games that Pokemon had in the 90's. It's just another lame way to get people to spend more money on Pokemon.

so its lame because a franchise with many games, would have another game? Hate to break it to ya, but everything about these games and collectible is all about making money in the end. Pokemon is a huge franchise, and this would definitely sell. don't know why 2 friends have 2 3ds's between them would be a problem considering thats how you battle with the pokemon games anyway. Sorry, but your reasoning as to why this would be a bad idea just doesn't make sense.

And I think you misunderstand, this would not take any part in your ds pokemon games (not adding pokemon to your game as you seem to think I was suggesting), it would be a seperate game on its own. Where all you do is battle augmented reality pokemon.

I don't like the trading card idea, but I think there's some cool things pokemon could do with augmented reality. Like, take your 3DS to the beach and when the camera sees it some legendary water pokemon will appear and you can have a battle and try to catch it with the background being the actual beach. I think that would be pretty cool.

Also AR will definitely be a feature of the 3DS, someone said there was an AR game with a dragon at some 3DS demo.

For augmented reality to work, the camera has to recognize a certain design. To simply point the camera at a beach or any other scenery will not yield augmented reality unless the exact design is being represented somehow.

so in reality, you wouldn't have to buy any cards, you'd just have to print off/draw the symbols that the camera recognizes.

I'd imagine that there could simply be a rough "beach" design for the camera to try and match that nintendo can make "loose". Kind of like how in prof. layton, you can draw the most pathetic looking 4 ever but because the "4" design that they're trying to recognize is "loose" it can still pick it up, it doesn't have to be a PERFECT 4. That's just my reasoning.

I understand what your saying, but having something recognize that you're trying to write a number, as opposed to a camera recognizing a certain type of scenery are two very different technologies. Don't get me wrong, what you suggest could be possible, but I don't think it can be at this point. We've only just started exploring digital face recognition, I think scenery recognition might be a little ways off.

Such things are being worked on. Check out Google Goggles: http://www.google.com/mobile/goggles/
