I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but redsn0w's jailbreak for the "MC model" iPod touch 2G devices is tethered as well. Most of the time, iDevices don't get rebooted, so being stuck with a tethered jailbreak isn't so bad.

Nope. Respringing is merely restarting the SpringBoard, not the entire system.

I haven't heard of a case where someone got kicked out for using Star on the demo iPhones... In fact, some reported employees seeing the jailbreak happen, and chuckling. They don't mind too much (mainly because everything in there resets nightly).

If you're too scared to do it at the Apple Store, you could always visit a Best Buy that sells Macs. They definitely don't care.

I almost jailbroke an iPad at the one near me, but I chickened out halfway.

Apple CAN NOT ban you if you jailbreak at their shops and CAN NOT sue you. As earlier this year, they made jailbreaking legal.

if you hate waiting, just install mac os x for pc (otherwise known as osx86) on a flash drive and boot from it..

i recommend iatkos v7. it is light weight and works on intel and amd. (sse2 or sse3 required)
