there's even a virus that can affect the ps3. it piggybacks over an ftp connection and fills the hard drive up with useless data. the only way I know of to prevent it is to password encrypt the ftp connection, which you can do with webman mod.

btw, that virus isn't intended for the ps3, it's just compatible with it.

Correct but a lot of the viruses either get patched quickly or they even never reach outside of the home folder.
Depending on what the goal is, the home folder could be all that's needed. After all, that is where all data belonging to your user resides. SSH keys, FTP logins, web browser data...I even wrote a PoC ransomware in Bash a few years ago that used Blowfish and chattr (along with some other tricks) just to see how far I could get without root, and it'd be pretty effective if ever used in the wild. It just takes creativity, and honestly, some super simple social engineering since Linux users like to think they're invulnerable.
