Hmm... my parents are getting a 52" TV... maybe I can convince them to get this "BluRay player" as well...

and the HDMI cable was $119.99. No freakin' way!

The PS3 just uses a generic male to male HDMI cable, they certainly don't cost $120! They cost like a tenth of that!
It's unfortunately quite common that stores try to rip you off on the HDMI cable.

The way it works is that they get you to buy the TV, and when you're sold on that you're very unlikely to go back on your decision. You said yes to your purchase, and are validating your choice by imagining how great it is that you finally have a HDTV. Then the clerk tells you that to truly get the most out of your purchase, you have to buy a $120 cable. The clerk will assure you that you won't find it cheaper anywhere else!

By the way, 6ft PS3 HDMI cable for $14 (free shipping worldwide, trustworthy site): http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5266

Enjoy your purchase, and be glad that you didn't buy the HDMI cable from them!

It may be true PS3 is lacking games a little right now, but there will be some worthy purchases by the end of the year so don't worry about it. Enjoy your 5 movies until then! I'd recommend 300, Casino Royale, and there's this beautiful nature documentary from the BBC that I forgot the name of.

Edit: I think the name was "planet earth"

erm ps3 is nothing but a bluray movie player. HD DVD is actually the superior format with better audio and video Standards. When a movie is released on both hd dvd usually always has the edge on bluray. the fact that the system costs so much and is touted for being the high def experience with standard RCA cables absolutley blows my mind .

A 50" Sony LCD sounds very nice indeed. Personally I would've gone with a Samsung since they're virtually identical (in fact, Samsung is the OEM for Sony's Bravia line) but cheaper, though a Sony's still a very good purchase.

PS2 is a hunk of junk, glad you got rid of it.

Are you being serious?

In terms of build quality it truly is. The PS3 is much better in that respect. I'd have bought one had there been any decent games for it, but seeing as there isn't I'll wait.

Fanboy. HD-DVD doesn't get support from the movie studios => enjoy your three movies a year.
I take it you've read reviews online that bash blu-ray, but never actually SEEN a movie in either format. I can assure you that if you're gonna be anal about picture quality, Blu-ray is the way to go right now. Don't even debate it : I've read the reviews for the three-four movies that were supposedly better in HD-DVD than in blu-ray, and the tester is either a corporate shill, or colorblind. My own eyes versus some loser on the internet.

By the way, the classic masterpiece BLOWFISH has been released on blu-ray, and boy is it a TREAT.

How much does it cost to rent a Blu-ray movie in the USA? Unfortunately they don't have any places around here, really sucks. Hope they come soon.

You should have gone with a cheapo HDMI instead of a component cable though. I actually have a Monster HDMI cable. Didn't buy it. Damn thing costs €80 round here. Got it from a friend who had loads of them.

As for games, I can't wait for LittleBigPlanet myself. I can already imagine the custom made levels that are based on other platformers.

Not so much more expensive than DVDs. I was actually surprised that DVDs and BD/HD-DVDs costs are within $10 of each other. Or you could think of it as BD/HD-DVDs being 50% more expensive. My nearby DVD rental rents them for a same price as DVDs, but hard to find any rentals that have HD stuff, mostly DVDs. I guess not so much demand.

At least you don't check the price and go "holy shit" on BD movies, opposed to PS3 games. But cheap ones are cheap for a reason, not all 1080p BD movies are of same quality. While Pirates of Caribbean is top visual quality, 300 offers just average visuals (haven't checked with DVD side by side, but people who never watched BD/HD-DVD recognized some difference)

PS3 is a cheaper BD player than 360s with HD-DVD addon, I'd choose PS3 as a media player over 360 too.

Like it matters, It's the ONLY one out right now. PSN ( Playstation Network ) isn't even out yet, it's in a Private beta given to a select few people. When it's fully out to the public and supported then we'll see.

I could have sworn that PSN was out. HOME is in Beta, but Home is not PSN. If you are judging PSN simply because of the updating of content, then you would also have to consider that Live is also in Beta and so is the whole Wii online thing (WiiConnect?).

You are correct. HOME is in beta, not PSN
