My laptop only has a single headphone port and so I bought a male to male & female cable so I could plug an aux cord into my 3ds and the female part of the cable. However windows (10) doesn't recognize it and neither does OBS. I already have Snickers Stream for the video from my 3ds and I just need to know how to get the audio working. Here's a link to the cable that I bought:

Thanks!

If you're plugging the 3DS audio port to your laptop headphone jack, wouldn't you need a male-to-male cable? Some laptops have separate, dedicated (two) 3.5 mm jacks for outputting sound for headphones and inputting sound for microphone. More recent laptops merge the headphone & microphone into one jack. Others still do not have the ability to record sound through external microphones unless you use a microphone with USB.

You'll need to check if your laptop's audio port has the ability to receive audio input for externally plugged microphone.

After connecting your 3DS to the laptop,

Check by opening "Sound" > "Recording" -or- "Recording Devices" > "Headset Mic" (or external Mic) option appears. If not, your laptop is not capable in recording as that jack only does sound output.

Buy a sound card with line in, like this one: http://www.usbgear.com/USBG-X4S.html

(The cheap transparent ones with a green and a yellow - shoud have been pink - jack will only have a microphone level, which is incorrect for a line-level output device like a console)

The cable you bought is a 3-pin extension cord, meaning it couldn't possibly have connected the 4th one for the microphone: but even if you bought the correct 4-pin to 2x 3-pin splitter, you would still have the level issue resulting in distorted or noisy sound (depending on how you set the console's volume)

You would need something like this. It splits your single 3.5mm port into separate ports for external audio input and output.
You'd also need a male-to-male 3.5mm AUX cord to connect the 3DS to the adapter.
