How to get into emulation?

I know it's a question that probably has been asked so many times that I should just go read their replies, but I genuinely wanted to hear about how you started and what your mistakes were. I wanted to get into emulation like citra, retroarch and such but I've not had the guts yet to just dig in since there are so many for so many different platforms it's hard to keep track of them all.

I don't know how you would get into emulation. If you like a console or game. Then emulation can be the best way to play that game quick.

Or if you want to try a game before you buy it. i.e. earthbound.....

the website i use the most to find emulators for certain consoles and games too (we love piracy) is vimms lair (vimm.net)
it houses pretty much every single retro game emulator and game for you to download and use without the risk of viruses.
its a great place to get started.
