I want to design my own little pattern thing for my DS. How will I put it on my DS afterwards?

you could get sticker paper for your printer, print it, cut it out, and slap it on, that might work.

There are some skin designer on the web, whee you can make your own design, and they'll send it to you then. Off course it's not for free but the stickers are of a good quality and won't lose their color too soon. Plus, they'll fit to your DS...

How do I make my own decals?

Use GIMP (or Photoshop if you're rich) or any editing tool and print them to decal-(like) paper. Then just apply them
