ESR works if you want to play copies of your legally owned games.
You have to patch the backup with esrpatch first and have to burn it onto a blank DVD-R.
However, the laser in the PS2 is of pretty poor quality, mine broke only after a few times using ESR to allow playing my NTSC version of Persona 3 FES.
It has the best compatibility though, as I could only load the VP2 NTSC-J version with it for example.
OpenPS2 can load backups via a USB stick, via an SMB share or via an internal HDD(PS2 phat only).
SMB has the best speed for OpenPS2 on slim PS2s but it can be pretty annoying on windows as sometimes it simply doesn't work to access a shared directory.
Sometimes disabling the firewall made it work on some PCs.
I use SMB via a raspberry pi zero and can power it directly via the PS2 and it is a nice solution imo.
There is a log flag in the configuration so troubleshooting is possible in comparison to Windows.
E.g. Popstarter allows to load few PS1 games and can load games via SMB as well and even when setting no account or password to use the default GUEST smb user, it used an own name to access the SMB share the f*****g thing.
So I had to set a password for OpenPS2 as well to allow usage of both homebrew applications even though I didn't want to.

Yes, it is taxing to copy multiple disks, in their entirety, using a +15 year old laser. It would be better/faster to use a more contemporary disk drive.
