Unless you know where the update file lays, then your best bet is to format the SD card that came with your 3DS. If you have games stored on there, don't do a format. (Unless they're games you don't care about)

i am going to do that
when i buy the XL, i will do the transfer function from OG to XL
i have some games i bought it from store

then i format the SD card

but even that, update will still come

idk if this help but there where some people trying to block it via firewall

hmmm, i will see that

Turn on parental controls. i believe it prevents accidental updating by requiring a code to be entered before you can update.

This would help if the update hadn't already been downloaded, but he just wants to get rid of the prompt to update since the update's downloaded, just needs to install.

Parental controls sadly don't block updating :\ I just tryed on my 6.3 3DS to add parental control, without any thing enabled on it, it prevents fomatting the system, but updating is still possible, without asking for the code (The 3DS ended saying no updates avalliable, and it never asked for the code).

Big difference between checking for an update and initiating one. The 3DS doesn't require you do to anything to check for an update, but it will block you from initiating an update once one is found.

When you do the system transfer, both consoles will be updated to the latest firmware anyway, so you won't be able to keep the 3DS on 6.1.
