I'm not seeing anything definitive on how to format my sd card other than fat32. Specifically what allocation should I use? Does it make any difference?

Totally depends on what you are using it for if it's just to launch homebrew and to install games then 32 kbs if it's for playing loadiine games then 64kb is recommended.
