Really depends on the retailer. I actually haven't pre-ordered anything since GCN, but I remember that coming in the mail 2 days early (launched on a sunday, I had it friday). That was from ebgames.com before they merged with gamestop.

For the 3DS I pre-ordered from Amazon, since I don't really trust gamestop not to oversell.

If you put down all the money for the preorder before release, you're guaranteed your 3DS (unless they didn't order enough for all the preorders).

So get this, if I pay for mine in full do I have a good chance picking it up during the morning/noon it releases? Because that chance looks like it'd be significantly slashed if there is a midnight launch going on (but if I must I definitely will attend it).

my GS manager said as long as its paid in full they have to hold any pre order for 48 hours after release

I'm French and I will be travelling to New York the week of the 3DS launch and I wondered if there is an event at the Nintendo World Store ? (midnight open etc...)
And do you think it will be possible to have a console on launch day without preorder ???

Except the risk of shortage of 3ds' when your games you want do come out.

Yes I know that, I don't care I always buy American consoles, games are cheaper and release earlier.

Seeing as it's Nintendo's own store, I imagine they would have a midnight launch, but it would be easiest to call them.

If you don't preorder, you have a very slim chance of getting one in such a large market area. If you flew down to New Orleans, you'd have much better odds of getting one. And some of us actually speak some french. (But going to a Nintendo Store launch sounds like an unforgettable experience.)

ah i have no worries of that, by the time something does come out on it i want im sure there will be plenty available, and if not i can wait, aint had a 3DS so far so another few months wont hurt.
although so far i cant see anything i want being released in the coming months so im not really worried

I don't think nintendo world store will have a midnight launch or that they are taking preorders for the 3ds, but certainly call to find out -(646) 459-0800. With previous hardware they would get regular shipments (sometimes daily) and had a ton. I got my wii there on the release date and I didn't get in line until maybe 3 or 4pm (I had been in line at 8am, but had to leave and come back). I don't think it will be AS crazy with the 3DS and everyone on launch day who lined up got a wii. The Toys R Us in times square will probably do a midnight launch and then there are several gamestops in nyc of course, but I would just recommend showing up to the nintendo world store 30-45 minutes before they open.
