How long should a game be?

I swear to god, as long as I don't have to deal with 50 million "FiNd thReEe of TheSe thINgS" quests, I'm pretty okay with most anything else.

( looking at you Darksiders II :glare: )

Oh, and i forgot about hand-holding, with long drawn out tutorials, as well as escort and guard/defend the npc etc. missions.. gimmicky levels or mini-games too, it's all just makes the game a bit of a slog, regardless of how long the game actually is.

I dread anything that has a countdown, especially minigames.
escort and guard/defend the npc etc. missions.

(flashbacks from Twilight Princess)

Seriously, the carriage defending thing and the Goron Spring Water quest was a nightmare for me when I was younger, lmao.

It's not so bad when it's optional tho.

BOTW: "Poor Princess Zelda is fighting all alone and desperately needs your help, it is imperative you come to her aid as soon as you possibly can. ... HAVING SAID THAT, if you can first go looking for ten insects to help this random guy get laid, that would be great."

Yeah I'm 100% fine with it if it's optional. But using the game I referenced as an example.. almost every single new area you went into, you had to do a super tedious find three of these items and return here! quest. I mean, the game itself was good; I enjoyed it. But they really overused that formula to the point of making me not even wanna play it again.

It's not the length, it's how you use it :creep:

The game should be as long as it can be without becoming/including a grind.
A game can last hundreds of hours if there is enough content that rewards you with a feeling of discovery, sense of progress or accomplishment.
But if there's not enough content or variety to sustain a feeling of challenge and achievement, when it's full of pointless bits that the player can pass on autopilot, that don't contribute to the story or give any indication of going anywhere, then it's in the game's best interest to be shorter.

The length of a game should be "as long as you can make it without padding."

When spending money, I want to get some value out of my investment as well, so the price of the game should reflect the time game is enjoyable. I do like games that clock tens to hundreds of hours with good replayability, giving the game per hour price of euro or less.
