Apple How can I run a iPhone 3GS as a iPod Touch?

I just got a iPhone 3GS. I think its on 4.2.1 but not really sure. It doesn't have any sim cards in it. And I want to run the phone as an iPod. When I turn it on it goes to the screen that says I need a Sim card. What should I do?

You need to hacktivate it. I knew it worked with the previous version of Greenpois0n, but for 4.2.1, I'm not sure if there currently is a method (maybe Redsn0w).

I want to try it out with Redsn0w I will post my results later. Thing is I don't know if this phone has the new baseband or the old one and since I can't check the serial code(can't go to settings) any way for me to find out?

1. Go into the Device Manager.
2. Inside of the USB controller section, find the item "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver."
3. View its properties.
4. In the Details, select Device Instance Path in the dropdown.
5. The end of the info string will show the bootrom version.

Well I got it figured out myself how to do it. I flashed the iPads bootrom on it.

He's basically unlocked it and completely voided any warranty left on the device. He "hacktivated" it so it would work without needing to have a SIM registered to it.

You can still use it as a phone. Actually, since you installed the iPad's baseband, you can unlock it, meaning you can use any carrier. But as Jamstruth said, installing the iPad's baseband will void your warranty, it is irreversible.

You can still use it as a phone. Actually, since you installed the iPad's baseband, you can unlock it, meaning you can use any carrier. But as Jamstruth said, installing the iPad's baseband will void your warranty, it is irreversible.

I got the iPhone second hand and it doesn't matter anyways. I tried out my friends T-Mobile sim-card today and it worked.
