How do I run homebrew on my dsi can I just put homebrew files in my r4i flash cart?

Can I get homebrew apps/ emulators to have they own icon on home screen or do I need cfw for that?

Yes, you need CFW to get anything else on your home screen.

Place the .nds file(s) on the flashcard's microSD, then launch the flashcard on your console.

Follow the guide for installing Unlaunch and HiyaCFW. This requires Flipnote Studio or some other homebrew exploit though, if you don't have those you are limited to DS homebrew on your flashcart.

how I do that

Just find some DS-mode homebrew (CANNOT BE DSi HOMEBREW, THAT REQUIRES UNLAUNCH/HIYA) and throw it on the flashcart.

Nope, HBL only supports being run through Hiya/Unlaunch.

It's easy. Just search for DS homebrew at the GameBrew website, and download it to your flashcard's microSD card.
You won't be able to run them from HBL, but you can use TWiLight Menu++ (which works from flashcard) to run them.
Once you put your homebrew on your flashcard, then launch your flashcard from the 3DS HOME Menu.

Retail/commercial ROMs, and recent homebrew from the console's SD card.
If it's installed on a flashcard though, you'll be able to run most kind of homebrew from the flashcard.

TWiLight Menu++ has GameYob (a GB/GBC emulator) built in. Just launch a .gb/.gbc/.sgb ROM, and the emulator will boot.
