Hacking Help with v. 4.5.0-10U R4

Hi, guys, I'm new to Nintendo 3ds XL and I bought one from a friend. It's version is 4.5.0-10U and I really want to get a r4 card or something. Which one can I have and can I upgrade my 3ds for the new firm version now or wait for the r4 and do something else? I'm a real noob in this matter so please help me. I want to have the latest version working r4. Also, I heard 3ds games doesnt work in any r4, is that true you can only play ds games on it?

The only flash cart that plays 3DS ROMs is the Gateway, and it is not working on anything later than 4.5, so never update or go online if you want to play 3DS ROMs.
