So I just recently installed Homebrew and I followed this video guide . One alteration I did make was on the homebrew site I put my software as old instead of new (As I have one of the older 3ds XL models) Now I was able to get homebrew onto my 3ds however whenever I open it, it just gives me the option to get steelhax and then whenever I do get steelhax or go through the process the whole thing crashes. Additionally playing any other games (I am trying to play fire emblem fates and mod it) The screen just stays black and I have the hard restart it. I am not quite sure what I am doing wrong but my end goal is just to get my fire emblem fates save file and edit it with FEFTWiddler.

Should I try to undo the effects of the previous guide? Or just follow this one and let it work itself out
First of all: Video tutorials are not the way to go for homebrew/custom firmware. I looked briefly into the video. At least its pretty new and it used: http://steelminer.jisagi.net/ at some point.
That's good. Have you read the troubleshooting part of the site? What exactly goes wrong? All you have to do to get Homebrew Menu started is on this page.

If you want full custom firmware (recommended) continue with Frogminer afterwards.

Well, whenever I open Homebrew, the screen goes black for a moment and then it loads up but it only gives me one option for installing steelhax. No clue what it is but the only thing I was really curious about was extracting the save data from my Fire Emblem fates save. However the 3ds crashes when I use the Steelhax option, and playing any other app also crashes it. (It goes black screen and requires a hard restart)

ps: Sorry for not replying, the website won't let me post replys... Maybe because I am a new user

Hard to say what is wrong. Try to get your setup exactly as in the guide. Download the files from the links on the Steelminer Guide - not whatever the video showed if there are differences. Correct otherapp as "payload.bin" is important (region, system menu version, old/new 3DS).

Replying is not the problem. The spam protection does not allow new users to post any links (even in quotes/replies). Spam bots always try to place their stupid links immediately and do not write some meaningful posts before.

There's no reason not to CFW your 3DS anymore, it's totally free on latest firmware and doesn't have any weird bugs like what's happening here. You won't even get banned unless you pirate games before they officially come out or cheat online. You can also install all your cartridge games to the home menu & play almost any retro game in the official virtual console emus with New Super Ultimate Injector.

Having the cartridge for Fire Emblem Fates on the 3ds itself does sound convenient... But I am trying to cheat the game lol

Follow 3ds.hacks.guide to get cfw, just pretend the Sharkive link is also there on the Finalizing Setup page & install it like all the other recommended homebrew.
edit: oh right the guide doesn't have frogminer yet, follow the link bungboi posted

Help Users
  • No one is chatting at the moment.
  • JuanMena @ JuanMena:
Will you give me mouth to mouth oxygen if my throat closes?
  • K3N1 @ K3N1:
Nah the air can do that
  • K3N1 @ K3N1:
Ask @x65943 he's trained for that stuff
  • JuanMena @ JuanMena:
Kissing random dudes choking in celery? Really? Need to study for that?
  • K3N1 @ K3N1:
    Yes it requires a degree
  • K3N1 @ K3N1:
I could also yank out the rest of my teeth but theirs professionals for that
  • x65943 @ x65943:
If your throat closes, putting oxygen in your mouth will not solve anything - as you will be introducing oxygen prior to the area of obstruction
  • JuanMena @ JuanMena:
    Just kiss me Kyle.
  • x65943 @ x65943:
You either need to be intubated to bypass obstruction or create a stoma inferior to the the area of obstruction to survive
  • x65943 @ x65943:
"Just kiss me Kyle." And I thought all the godreborn gay stuff was a smear campaign

It was waiting for you to order another one.
Seems like, your PSU was waiting for a partner.
  • JuanMena @ JuanMena:
    Keep them both
separated or you'll have more PSUs each year.
  • K3N1 @ K3N1:
Well one you insert one PSU into the other one you get power
  • JuanMena @ JuanMena:
    It literally turns it on.
