Hi guys im new to the site hence my first post,I bought my daughter a 3ds for christmas and purchased an r4 3ds flash cart all games work fine obviously there is now way to play 3d games.Im just wondering is it safe to update the actual nintendo 3ds to the latest firmware or will it block the flash cart after the update. Thanks alot guys thanks for allowing me to join this great site.

Before updating, you have to check the flashcart's official website (it should be printed on the sticker of the flashcart and/or on the box of the flashcart). Go to the website and see if they have an update that'll make your cart work on the latest 3ds firmware. If not, you're stuck on the current (outdated) 3ds firmware, or you'll have to use another ds system to use your flashcart.

Latest 3ds firmware is v3.0.0-6

Some websites might refer to it as 3.0 or something similar.
Cheers again here is the website http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/downloade.asp the card I have is the one at the top cant seem to see anything about 3ds firmware compatability, you seem knowlagable do you think it will be safe to update sorry for the noob questions just dont want to screw up my daughters games as she would not be best pleased thanks alot.

PS Told you im a noob lol it states the firmware in yellow so it should be fine im guessing.

The firmware in yellow is that of the kernel/loader; it has nothing to do with the bootloader's firmware. The kernel/loader loads up the flashcart and allows booting of homebrews/roms.

The bootloader is what you want updated to make it work on the latest 3ds fw. Updating the kernel/loader won't update the bootloader, so be careful about it.

Here are the instructions on updating the bootloader (taken from the page you linked me to):

Thanks alot mate glad to see there are users out there that help out the noobs unlike some other sites I will not mention cheers.

There's no flashcart as of now that could play 3DS games, but you might want to update to the latest firmware to get eShop, browser and the video capability.
