The Census Bureau poverty stat is pretty useless for the US.

- The rate is the same across the country, so it doesn't matter if you live in NY city or Buttfuck, Alabama.
- As mentioned, it also hasn't been adjusted enough for the recent huge increase in prices within the last couple years.
- The rate is extremely low, and counted BEFORE tax.

So for example, a family of four would have a cut-off of about $32,970 pre tax. If a family lived in NY, but made $33,000 pre tax, they wouldn't be counted as impoverished. Taxes in more profitable states are much higher, so that $33k would go down even further for actual spendable money. I don't think that someone can even afford the rent in NY city for that much.

So a question back to you would be: Would a family making only $32,970 pre tax in NY be considered living in poverty to you? Hell, could you raise a family of four anywhere in the US for that amount? Because the Census Bureau doesn't.

I honestly don't think he's trying to. If anything, he's trying to convince himself that there is SOME good news out there economically for the US, when there really isn't. His Twitter feed had this nugget of potentially good news, and he stored it away in his psyche to ease the pain.

Thank you for a source but looking at the numbers, this isn’t just vague but also kind of misleading. It’s barely moved a fraction of a percentage. You are talking like it’s some massive jump, but 0.5 isn’t that big or even remarkable. This honestly just comes off as a desperate attempt to find anything positive to say about the Trump’s administration’s constant bumbling

It's quite an terrible situation. Belarus makes about 6M tons of potash a year, and the US needs about 5.6M tons. But Belarus already has buyers all across the EU for their 6M for the entire year. Next year if the US wants to get more from Belarus, it will trigger a huge increase in prices for all countries in that area that need it. Those extra costs will once again go to the farmers. Those same farmers who need to pay $1,000 every time they want to fill up a tractor in diesel with today's prices.

Get ready to pay a shit-ton more for basic foods if Trump doesn't call off the war and the pointless tariffs.

Though not wrong, it's not how I read it. To me, the real headline is that Trump unfreezes Russian oligarch money. This is just to even allow a small amount of fertilizer to be traded, which wouldn't even be needed if you had any reason to start a trade war to begin with.

The phrase "fee waste a good crisis" comes to mind. And yes, it implies that Trump is a Russian asset. I dare trump fanboys to defend this action.

Huh, maybe I buried the lede there.

What's odd is that Trump was the one who put the sanctions on them in the first place. It was expanded by Biden after.

In this situation, I'm not sure how much this action was spurred on by him being a Russian puppet. It still feels like desperation to find any way out of the current shitty situation that he's made himself. He did an AI search for any country that made potash, and Belarus came up.
