Gaming Help picking out a Graphics card.

So I just got a new computer HP Pavilion p6510f and the system specs are:
amd athlon II 630 Quad Core processor @2.8GHz
4GB DDR3 ram
750GB hard drive
Integrated Ati Radeon HD 4200
680W
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
So my question is can you guys help me choose a new video card that will play games like Crysis (and future games to come) at least on medium settings at this resolution. My spending limit is $150 so nothing huge like the ati radeon hd 5870(even though I would love to have that one). So any help will be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I'm an ati fanboy but if it's a nvidia that's perfectly fine.

Directx 11 supports higher tessellation, has higher quality shadows, and basically just looks better.

And for $20 more you can get a gtx 465 which is way better than a 5770.

I would suggest a gtx460 instead of a 465. Benches say it is better but you can do that research

The gtx460 768mb version is a cheaper than that 465 and the 1 gig version is a little higher, but they say the difference is pretty noticeable.
Supposaly the 460s scale very well, but that's if your into SLI and junk.
if not the 5830 and the 5770 are not bad cards to that. They are up to that tier too.

Are those within the price range I said because I said $150 or less because i also need to buy the monitor which I suspect will be about $120.

So can you guys tell me which one is better overall. Also which one would be cooler cause I don't know if my computer will be able to handle all the heat. Thanks guys.

The 4870 will perform (slightly) better in most situations however not that much over the 5770. Personally when I had that choice I bought the 5770 (loving it) due to DX11 and several other features (such as Eyefinity):

Both can be found cheaper secondhand now, might be something you might want to try.

Why ?

Because at 2.8 gigz, your going to hit a smooth run with that video card. As with the other readons its kinda of a joke, because you have already the CPU either overclocked or a good CPU system. A lot of people cannot buy the GTX 460 or ATI alike card 6830 /5830 because they have a 2.0, 2.2 system running. Take advantage of your status in 2.8 gig. Youll find the GTX 460 is cheaper than the two cards you listed above.

Granted his CPU is good but he has a budget. Period. Unless you can gain tremendous gains with little money it is a good idea to wait a bit, however with a 33% price increase (200USD over 150) it's absurd to compare cards like that. Now if you can get the 460 for a 120 usd, feel free to send me one

At which point I believe the 460 scales roughly linear in price / performance (15% more expensive 15% better performance).

In the end, I would personally consider the 460 but I haven't seen any real reviews or w/e about it and lack personal experience with the fermi arch. My 5770 is a card I really like though, drawing little power, being quiet (oveclocks okay, roughly 13% though I hardly use an OC) while delivering great performance. I have however bought it for 150 roughly around launch

The 4870 (a high-end card which I've had for such a long time now) is slightly more powerful than the 5770 (a mid-ranged card from the last generation), but the 5770 supports DX11. In my opinion, between the two, the 5770 is the better option. Also, 4870s are no longer in production.

Then you get 2 strong competitors for the 5770 - the GTX 460 (as stated before), which outperforms the 5770 but is a bit more expensive, and the new HD 6850, which is a midranged card from AMD's new line of graphics cards just coming out, which outperforms the 460 by a fair amount whilst only being slightly more expensive.

Too many "which"es but meh.

Also, it's fair to say performance scales with price. With some exceptions, the more you pay for something, the more performance you get out of it. On the other hand, there's also a matter of drivers (nVidia famously release better drivers than AMD, although AMD have stepped up their game over the last year or so) and a matter of programming (some games are designed to work better on nVidia cards or AMD cards - look for the "nVidia, the way it's meant to be played" slogan on games).

The thermal compound might be a little messed up but it can easily be replaced:

XFX and Sapphire are both third party developers for AMD graphics cards. They each take the base design of the HD5770 then tweak it in their own way. Some XFX cards are slightly overclocked to 875Mhz (with their XXX edition card) with a noisier fan to compensate, whilst Sapphire cards are usually the base 850Mhz but with their own redesign of the phase regulators, RAM and cooling to make it run cooler and quieter than the base design. This doesn't mean XFX don't try the same, since both have a range of 5770 designs on the market.

Also Sapphire cards tend to be more expensive. EDIT: Here's a link to Scan.co.uk so you can see the different designs currently available to the British market. Note that XFX and Sapphire do half of them.

Used cards, provided that they haven't been mistreated in their previous system, should work just fine. They tend to be slightly more worn, and run a little hotter than brand new cards, but replacing the thermal paste and cleaning out all the dust should fix that no problem. Just beware that I don't think the warranty covers second hand graphics cards - but that you can check for yourself.
