Hmmmm. Well aside from doing a system wipe on the WiiU I'd personally just update to 5.5.1. We've been waiting a while for IOSU and it's only speculation right now on what firmwares will be supported. Don't take my word as gospel but I'd update it. If/when the IOSU exploit comes out I won't have troubles finding a lower firmware WiiU online. Might as well enjoy full hassle free homebrew right now.

I'm tempted to update it, but knowing my luck it would still not work somehow. Honestly though, from what I've seen, the current setup (which works on 5.5.1 too) can do basically everything (homebrew, backups, etc) except for play games online, which I don't care much about.

If it helps ease your mind a bit, a while back I helped some dude get his homebrew working. Nothing would launch on his end either and he ended up updating. He reported that it worked first try afterwards.

UPDATE: I bit the bullet and updated, and for lo and behold, it instantly worked on the first try. Everything is running flawlessly now.

Thanks a lot to everyone who put up with my nonsense and helped me sort this mess. I'm still baffled as to what was preventing it in the first place though. I've also edited the original post to reflect this, in case anyone ever runs into a similar situation.

Another person who it worked for! Congrats on fixing it :D.

I'm gonna start recommending updating now for anyone who has trouble.
