Just to reply to a previous post, I play WoW on my Acer Aspire One, as well as Call of Duty 1, Medal of Honor, Spore, Stepmania, Unreal Tournament 2003. Just yesterday on a consumer-program on the tele over here there was a piece about Asus netbooks. They had complaints of failing batteries and batteries draining whilst powered off.

I recently bought a Toshiba NB100, pretty decent. 1.6ghz atom, 1gb ram and 160gb sata hd. Works quite well. Hell it's almost on par to my old acer and emachine laptops I used to have. I also have a eeepc 701SD, but the Toshiba is tonnes better.

I would personally go for the HP mini.
Even though it only has 2 usb ports and one headphone/mic, the keyboard is worth it.
Compared to other netbooks, the sound i s really good.
Did i mention it actually looks nice? It is in a macbook-esque form factor.
The 3 cell battery is not that bad. It is lithium polymer, so it would last more cycles, and a bit longer. Instead of the measly 1-2 hours from other 3 cells, you get around 3 hours. That is still not a lot, bt considering how great it looks I personally think it is worth it.
Netbooks are cut down notebooks. What is the poit of getting on that is ugly as sin?
It is suposed to be portable, small tasks.
Turn it on in a miinute, do something, turn it off.
They are not for hardcore gaming, but i must admit i hav played a ton of StarCraft on mine.
They are (unofficially) called netbooks.
NETbooks. They are for really small tasks. I think when you are on your campus and you are typing up your essay, you would want to do it on something that actually looks nice. The aspire one doesnt ook too bad, but the 6cell is like a unsightly HUMP.Gosh, 3 hours is enough for me, just plug it in when there is a wall available. And prolly with WiFi off, brightness down, etc, you could get much more.
When you are getting a netbook, you have to compromise. A lot.

You want it for portability convenience and overall awesomeness, no?

The 1000HE outlasts the NC10 in battery time and costs less for better specs.

I still say the 1000HE is your best bet.

Also, yeah, don't get a 3 cell Aspire (Walmart one) because no one likes a NETbook with crappy battery life ):

Ok, so now it looks like I should wait a bit to get a better laptop, or get either the AcerAspire or the 1000HE (I can't find the Asus 901 anywhere) which I don't know much about. How about price? which one is more expensive? I can only spend about $400

Edit: so it's around $400, which is ok I guess, and the only differences are the 1.66GHz proccesor and the 6-cell battery. Does upgrading from 1.60GHz to 1.66GHz make that much of a difference?
And also, I don't plan on going on extremely long trips away from a power supply, so I could do with the Acer's battery.

Mainly, I don't like that much the $50 bump between prices. (I'm pretty cheap

It isn't just 0,06 GHz more...the front side bus is raised from 533 to 667 MHz as well
And trust me you will regret getting a 3 cell netbook...
Ok, so I'm not a computer n00b but it doesn't look like I know enough to know about 533 to 667 MHz. What does that mean?
And btw, when I talk about the AAO I talk about this certain model

If I'm informed right the RAM should run at 667 MHz now...so your data you'll save temporaly get saved into the RAM

But how much of a difference does it make? Enough to make programs run alot smoother?

I haven't tested it myself, but it should make the programs run a litte bit smoother

The Eee 901 isn't being produced anymore I think, it's impossible to find here too.

Go for the 1000HE, it has better battery and CPU than most others, flush fitting battery, built in bluetooth, and a nice price tag.

The 901 specific is gone, I think. However, 900 variants have popped up. A lot of the netbooks are dropping prices fast because CeBIT is just around the corner. It's one of ASUS favor conference/trade shows to release new products.

CeBit? What's that?
CeBit
ok, that didn't help at all. the main page for cebit is from germany, and there is no talking about netbooks whatsoever. So whats CeBit doing thats important about netbooks?

I think he was suggesting you should check out what CeBit has to show, it's a computer expo.

Maybe check out a gadget blog (engadget for example).

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
