I think he wants a really good pc though, minium i5, 4gb ram, 1gb mid range gpu etc.

Honestly, once you have a quad core processor (AMD or Intel), you don't notice a real difference. The CPU is rarely where your bottleneck lies - it's your graphics card, RAM, and hard disk speed mainly that slows things down. I have an AMD Athlon II x2 and it's more than enough for most games. The only time you really need a good processor is something intense like converting videos.

Like I said, a quad core is the most you need for a gaming machine. And, AMD is all you need. Use the $100 you save from switching to AMD to get a better graphics card.

If you choose to skimp on the CPU in favour of a strong GPU, then certain types of games (e.g. RTS) will suffer for it. Also emulation will suck. On the other hand, it is true that most games rely mostly on the GPU than the CPU, so having the best GPU possible will, for the most part, determine how well games run.

Now, since the only thing the OP has asked for is the parts to build a "boss gaming computer", with no mention of the type of games he wants to run and the kind of budget he has, we can only tell him what are the best parts money can buy. The table I linked in the second post of this thread shows the best parts in increments based on value/cost. If he wants further help/advice, he needs to give us more details as to what exactly he needs.

Tl;dr, there is no point in advising him to get an AMD CPU until he tells us what kind of budget he is working from. Simple fact: Intel CPUs on the Market are FAR stronger than the outdated and underpowered AMD CPUs.

so he is going to get something along the lines of
i7 2600k model
8gb ram ddr3
1-2gb mid-high end gpu
1tb hdd

something like that.
Might throw in a solid state drive xD
Anyway im building it, recommendations a compatible motherboard?

also maybe a 700-1000 wat psu.

Also a decent monitor.

Without knowing how limited/unlimited your budget is, I'll just throw a few suggestions.

Motherboard, ASUS Sabertooth P67 (one of the best motherboards for gaming, not the best for over clocking), MSI P67A-GD53 (one of the best motherboards for over clocking as the chipset won't heat up much under heavy overvolting...cheap too), ASUS Maximus IV Extreme (comes in P67 and Z68 versions, expensive but boasts the best features).

For the PSU and monitor, refer to my previous post (#16 in the thread).

For the graphics, you seem to be aiming (mid-high) at a HD 6950 or GTX 570.

HDD, either Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB or the Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB (similar performance, Samsung drive is cheaper). I always go for Samsung drives - Korea is good for that kind of thing.
SDD, if you do decide on getting one, then the choice of HDD doesn't matter. Crucial C300 series if you want it cheaper, OCZ Vertex 3 or Crucial M4 series if you want high performance (Vertex 3 has much higher performance than M4).

I don't think anybody cares for the reason, but anyway, $1000 AUD is easier to work with. If you link me an Australian computer site you'd be happy to order from, I can help fish out a decent build from it.

Don't just go by the RAM that a graphics card has for a base for deciding which one to get. A graphics card can have 4GB of RAM, but if it can't process worth shit then it's going to suck either way.

Try this to determine which video card you should be getting.

That's a heavily limited benchmark that doesn't reflect gaming performance at all, but it is good enough for guidance in raw graphical processing ability.

Just a tip.
When you look for parts online and have a good budget,don't always go for the item most pricy or placed last/first on the list.
Most probably when comparing nvidia 590 & 580.

dont worry guys I know what im doing (sky doesnt) I understand you could get a 4GB GPU and it would still suck.
I meant a 1-2GB mid-high speed GPU really. Probally ATI/AMD since there my brand of choice really.
